Counselling
My uni offers free counselling to uni students. I know it would be the best thing for me. But the idea of not knowing what to expect worries me. So I can never press send on that email to ask for an appointment

can you elaborate on what it is that worries you? I saw a counsellor at uni and it took me 3 attempts to sign up for an appointment. If I can help in reassuring you in any way feel free to message me if you would prefer to chat about it :-)

Whether it is seeking therapy, counseling or just any form of help can be difficult for people who experience problems to seek help. That is completely normal that you feel anxious about it, since you haven't tried it before. That is why programs like 7 cups exist in the first place. Some people aren't comfortable giving their information, showing their face, displaying body language or even to react face-to-face with a professional. Not to mention telling people about your problems gives people the fear that they're being judged. If it is too much of a big step for you to take, but you know that it is necessary, then you are facing a dillema. You want to seek help, but you are also anxious about numerous things. I reccomend you take smaller steps.
Firstly, try asking people you know who have already gone through this counseling process how they reacted, felt, etc. Ask them different questions. If their answers are sincere, then you will feel more comfortable with idea.
Secondly, as I said previously, programs like 7 cups are kind of like free anonymous counseling, where you can not be judged. Try online therapy sessions and best yet try talking to an active listener on 7 cups. After a few sessions, you will get an idea of how the counseling experts will function, how they will treat your problem, etc.
To sum up, it is essentially an anxiety you're going through. The anxiety of not knowing what is to come. But remember, the best way to handle uncertainty is to become more certain. Inform yourself of the program, take online anonymous therapy sessions and ask questions to the people who are in charge of the counseling program.
Good luck and best wishes.

What you're experiencing is totally normal and your question is great. Of course there's a lot to fear if we don't know what we're getting ourselves into. It sounds like you're moving towards making a first appointment, but a lot of unknowns are blocking you too. I would suggest some of the following in preparation for starting counseling at your university.
1. Ask others who have had counseling expeeriences. What was a first session like? What kind of approaches and styles can you expect?
2. When you make a first appointment, feel free to ask the therapist questions. Make sure that this time is useful for you and that you trust this individual. Not all therapists will be a good fit, and that's okay.
3. Have a general idea of what goals you want to address. It will make therapy a more effective and meaningful time.
Good luck and let us know if you have any other questions. We're here for you!
