Do you think sensitivity is a weakness or strength?

What is your take on sensitivity, especially as it relates to social anxiety and relationship anxiety? Do you find it difficult to trust and open up to people about your anxiety out of fear that you're going to be told, "Oh, you're just TOO SENSITIVE!"?

This is a problem that I've faced countless times and continue to. Sometimes, I wish today;s society would just cut the GD macho crap and rethink their opinion about sensitivity. I do not think it's a weakness ... for me, it is a strength because it shows you care about others and about what's going on with them.

So ... what's your opinon? Do you think you're too sensitive, or is today's world just too insensitive (and I'm not referring to politics, either ... just about today's society).

Thank you all in advance for your opinions! smiley

One of the exanples when I asked myself whether there was a lack of empathy in today's world was when my best friend CM passed away 2 months ago and one of my supervisors at work gave me the spiel that "life goes on" and overall was not very supportive after I had lost my best friend to pancreatic cancer. I was made to feel as if I was being too sensitive by continuing to have grief despite coming back to work.

The thing is ... grief is not a linear process and just this morning even, I thought about CM and was feeling mournful.

Thanks all for reading! smiley

In some senses it can have a negative imact on you a person however if you are able to cope with being highly sensitive then its ok. It's actually other people that cause the most negativity though as they perceive you as different and may takeadvantage of your sensitivity. There is a real lack of empathy from others and this forces sufferers to bottle up their emotions which can leave to other issues.

So despite the fact it shows that your a caring, kind and loving human being, it brings out the ack of understanding and empathy in others.

@AbbyHarris1976 I think being sensitive is a strength when it manifests itself as empathy for others. I think its a weakness when it prevents a person from developing coping mechanisms for lifes trials.

I'm glad you posted this. I've always wondered if I was too sensitive--which I have concluded myself as sensitive. But, I don't see anything wrong with it. The only thing I dislike: when I think too hard about things, when I'm not assertive when I should be, or considering other peoples' feelings too much--to the point where I leave myself behind.

People are overbearingly inconsiderate. It irritates me very much. Among some other issues, mental illness is one of those that are silent. That's one of the reasons why people easily dismiss it all of the time. Sensitivity, is part of having humanity, and having humanity is a good thing. It sounds obvious, which it is, but people need to be told this. Which is unfortunate that such a reminder need to take place.

Thank you so much for posting this! yes

There are a lot of times where I might replay a stressful social situation or conversation in my head a billion times and overanalyze it, wondering if I said or did something wrong. That causes me a lot of sleepless nights also. lately, I'm trying to make more of an effort to let it go and realize that it isn't always my fault, or isn't even my fault at all. smiley

Those replays of awkward situations get me, too. It's good to hear that you've taught yourself to be lenient on yourself and try to let go of self blame. I've worked on it as well. I think I'm a bit better at letting mistakes go. But as far as listening to people's hate and insensitivity, I still have a hard time not overthinking it sometimes, though I've gotten a bit better at letting that go.

I wish you the best. smiley

@AbbyHarris1976 Hey How are you?

Myself, I think it's a little bit of both. It's a weakness because people make me nervous and I have my guard up so I'm quiet and watching everything and reading people but then it's strength because it helps me notice things and pick up on other things that people miss. Not sure if that makes any sense
