Have to go clothes shopping with a parent
Is it embarrassing/pathetic of me to go clothes shopping with my mum because I'm too anxious to do it on my own? Like I've never gone clothes shopping on my own before, I will have to have my mum be outside the changing rooms when I'm trying stuff on. And I'll feel really anxious away from her in the shop. And I'm 17. I feel really pathetic about it.
It's alright to go with anyone you want to, and you're still at an age where you're trying to find your style so it's better to have someone close with you while you're shopping. They know you and might help you better.
@friendlyYam what thoughts run in your head when you are all by yourself in public? are you afraid of people looking at you or are you afraid people are judging? I would like to know this.
its all negative thoughts in your head that you can't probably ignore but what you can do is, when you are out, while buying clothes or trying them just imagine yourself in different colors or sing a song in your head to overcome the negative thoughts.
At the end of the day, it'll all be fine and you will get through the day perfectly fine. This should be your mantra everytime you get negative thoughts or anxiety.
My thoughts are I think I'm ugly, weird, awkward, not normal, and I'm incredibly scared of being judged, especially by people who look nice. I have severe social anxiety so unfortunately I don't go out by myself very much and have a very hard time doing that. I've never gone shopping by myself. I'm trying to change my thoughts and not dislike myself so much, but I can't help but feel weird and ugly.
Not embarrassing at all. Needing your mum there for support just shows you’re human and 17 is still young, so don’t be hard on yourself. Loads of people feel anxious shopping alone. If you ever want to ease into it, browsing online can help. I’ve found checking out some Zappos deals is a low-stress way to shop and try stuff on at home. Go at your own pace, there’s no rush to “outgrow” needing support.
