Learning social skills-worth it or no?
Hello, My counselor and I are trying to work out if I have a type of high-functioning autism or no, since im waiting on a diagnosis. I'm leaning a little but towards no, but even if that is the case its obvious that some things just aren't firing correctly for me in social interactions. For instance, if I may use a metaphor, imagine if you will that one day, breathing was no longer an automatic process for you. You wake up and find that you not only have to focus on breathing, but you have to time and count your breathing and manually adjust it whenever you do something strenuous. On top of having to focus on that, people want you to go to school, and get a job, all while you still have to focus on breathing. And they get mad at you if you suck at your job because you are focusing on breathing and staying alive. Thats what social situations are like for me. I have to think and calculate every single action to get the correct one every single second. How far away am I standing? Am I leaning towards them like I am interested? How long do I make eye contact before it's awkward? Do I stare at their eyebrows or not? Am I being annoying? Did I interrupt someone? Are they bored now? The list goes on and on...and its exhausting. But it seems like everyone else's brains just do this automatically! The world is built for socialites and networkers and egnimatic extroverts. Thats just life. So if you want to get anywhere, you have to play by their rules, especially in career building. But i just want to be myself and be able to talk to people without without feeling like everything is a videogame quick-time event. Should i continue to try to learn? Is it worth it? Or should i just give up?
Hi Jessie, it can be tough to learn social skills for myself and I had to learn that was important as well in my life. It might not seem important but every social interaction we have makes us better at being social with people in general. What is a goal that you have in your social life currently?

Hi Asher, thank you for your reply, sorry I didn't see it for awhile.
I'm not really sure if I have any social goals really, nothing concrete. I'm actually just collecting a list of social body movement queues and different phrases in language that indicate that you should behave a certain way.
I've given up on connecting with people, especially in the type of region and culture I live in. Now it seems I'm studying sociology as a hobby...
