Loud people, small spaces

I usually don't have panic attacks in public. But yesterday was one of the most anxiety filled journeys I've ever had.

I went up to the city(San Fran) with some people yesterday. Three of the eight people that went were my friends, the others were friends of a friend all of who I had just met that morning.

We were planning on going up to the city and drinking( everyone was 21 lol) and having fun. We would take the train and then head to the park and just chill until we wanted to go home.

But everyone started drinking on the train. Which was fine I didn't mind the drinking. It was the obnoxious singing and talking that came with the drinking that started my anxiety. Everyone was being so loud and starting to sing so loudly, bothering everyone around us. I understood that they were having fun but I usually don't like to be part of the "loud obnoious teenagers." Once we got into the city we stopped at a Safeway and everyone bought more to drink. What really started my anxiety was this homeless man that was hanging around our group and would not go away when we asked him to. He wasn't doing anything really bad, but he was trying to talk to me and it made me super uncomfortable. So once my friends started to intervene by yelling at him, it just made my anxiety worse. Plus once we took the tram to the park the homeless guy FOLLOWED US, He got off and followed us to the next Safeway we went to after the tram ride. +10 anxiety points

The tram ride though oh man..

I'm calling it a tram but it's more like a subway kind of a thing. In the tram the group begins to be loud and obnoxious again. Passing around a wine bag and getting everyone to drink. I was already having anxiety but when I looked to see the directions to the park, it showed on my phone that we were going the wrong way. So when I tried to bring it up my friend drunkingly talked in my face saying "I lived in San Fran I know where I'm going, here drink" I was already anxious, and drinking would not help me at this point. Once again the group started singing, so loudly and just it was driving me crazy. They started using the handle bars as play ground equipment and I was just so afraid we were going to get kicked off the tram some how. Then we started riding underground. More and more people filled the tram and my friends seemed to get louder and louder. Igoring the fact that there were other people on the tram with them. My hands were sweaty, my mouth was dry, and I could not breath. We were underground, it was loud, and crowded, and i was trying so hard not to break down and cry. I was so quiet and my friend could tell I was uncomfotable. She was almost lecturing me, telling me what I might be anxious about and telling me to calm down. But yeah that didn't help at all. Once we finally got to our stop I pushed my way out of the tram into the fresh air so I could breath again. It took me about two hours of being quiet and just trying to calm myself down as I walked with my friends. Once we finally sat down at the park, I came back down to normal.

I never thought I had social anxiety, and maybe this wasn't it but this situation was so scary to me. I was not having fun, with these loud obnoxious drunk people.

Now today, my feelings are so numbed out by everything that happened. I felt exhasted by the time I got home. Just thankful the Lord got me home safe.

Hi @ManandaPanda

Thank you for sharing your story first of all. I have fond memories of San Fran from when I lived in the US and taking the muni train into the city. It's a pretty bustling place with lots of people around you all of the time so I hear you about your feelings of discomfort with how the people were acting. Is that social anxiety? Possibly. Possibly not. But the important thing is that you felt self-conscious and uncomfortable in that situation. That's all that matters.

It's really healthy for you to share that and get those feelings out. Sometimes that helps so I thank you for taking that step. Hopefully you're feeling a little better today.
