Socializing with "friends" at work

I have always been the loner at my previous workplaces, but I've decided to change things at this current workplace, so I started to open myself up to people. It's such a challenge, rewarding at times. The first person that I opened up to is this seemingly friendly girl, R. Later in the friendship as I got closer to her, I started seeing the real her and it unsettled me alot. One of the biggest things she did was to talk about me behind my back. I have trouble trusting people and the fact that she talks about me triggers my distrust and I could never look at her the same way again. The reason I suspect that she talks about me is when I didn't call her to join a work meeting because she wasn't on the project, the second is that when she tried to boss me around, by dictating even the words that I'm chatting with to a supervisor, and I just froze and didn't listen to her. Those are just minor things that didn't even need to be dictated because I know english, it's not like I don't know how to write down even simple sentences. She seemed pissed off that I didnt type out the words that she dictated to me and she went to the keyboard where I was and typed it out herself. That behaviour is really immature and she was the one who was younger than me. Another thing is that she's a spoilt youngest child in her family and she proudly admits it. Since she discovered that I won't listen, she starts to hate on me, especially behind my back. She's charming and manipulative

@lifenomad

I'm glad that you can deduct she is a manipulative person (wanting someone to write out what she wants?? now, that's too far and obsessive). Since she is younger, I would take that into account and not blame her too much. Many people find it hard to grow out of that middle-high school mindset, because the fact is: many people have outgrown it and it's time to start assimilating into respectful, adult-like behavior.

That does not mean her behavior is excusable, but there must be things either (1) in her past that she has yet to grow from, or (2) no one has pointed it out, therefore she assumes it's alright to behave in such ways. Overall, it is your choice to follow her words or not / be her friend. I personally would be thankful for the early friendship, but especially after getting to know somebody, I would re-evaluate their place in my life/social circle. It seems as though her friendship may not be something you should pursue, I would keep a healthy distance and continue on without worrying too much about her words. After all, people (especially those within higher position) tend to notice a person's character after time, such as you have with her, and her actions will catch up to her. For now, it is up to you whether or not to continue associating with her closely or at an arms-distance. You do you and others will catch on!

I hope this helped. I understand the struggle of work-place drama and also the type of person your coworker seems to be. You do not have to take my advice at all and are free to disagree, though it is food for thought! Keep your chin up, wishing you well. heart

@notsureyet1 thanks for your kind and supportive words. Indeed I feel like people start to slowly realise what I have been observing. But I feel that next time I notice someone's hidden negative character, it's hard to realise it and not be able to tell others because they won't always readily believe something that they haven't seen for themselves and may label me as a negatively assuming person instead. Like u said, keep my chin up and just do me. Let life unfold and everything will fall into place. I've overcome my distress towards that immature person at work by extending my social circle of friends outside of work. Every time I have to face her, I'm just so over those old anxieties. I still interact with her and hang out with our mutual friends sometimes, but my inner self feels much lighter now and I don't worry so much about those things I used to, like whether they are talking bad about me, etc. Extending my social circle of friends does wonders.
