Attending a conference while battling with mild anxiety and depression
Hi:
Like the rest of you, I am autistic and:
I am going to be attending a conference on Friday but I am battling with depression and anxiety which seemed to show itself back in the spring due to some things that have been going on in my life.
There were two events that I attended where my anxiety and depression were up
A. I was at a conference for work that I helped plan and looked forward too but I ended up sinking into depression due to a woman attending as a vendor who I used to know who is the director at a sheltered workshop when I used to be a client. Unfortunately, she has a closed mind about autistics as if we are all broken and needs to be fixed. I spent the entire conference crying and feeling very sad after that
B. I am a blogger and I went to an event where I am acquainted with the speaker which was out of state. During my time there, I felt out of place because I was around new people, who I later learned to have networks in my city. Anyway, this person was under major crunch time and also came in really late due to flight delays so they were tired. Because of that, they were stressed out and were not as friendly with me this time. Meanwhile, I was scared about doing things to make them mad or rather I felt very judged even though the speaker tried to be as polite as possible while holding themselves together.
I am going out of state to another conference tomorrow to blog about this event and because my anxiety and depression have affected other areas of my life but I am receiving treatment. I really want this event to go well too because I have been looking forward to it.
So far, I plan on
1. Taking a nap in my room the day before
2. Using the indoor pool
3. Using the exercise equipment
What are the suggestions for the conference and especially when engaging with some of the speakers?
@Summershy
TBH I have no real idea, I'm not autistic but I am quite sensitive. When I want a degree of seperation, I find that earplugs, or even better, music, will provide that.
