Autism + Gender

Hi everyone I'm relatively new to 7 cups (after being gone a long time) and since then have been medically recognized as autistic.

One thing that I've been struggling a lot with lately, I don't see too many people talking about. The correlation between autism and altered perceptions of gender.

I've been questioning my gender since the 7th grade (or before, really). And after calling myself a trans man since like 11th grade, I'm once again severely questioning my gender.

I've been out under a certain name for a while too, and all of my friends and partners use it and it feels right (at least I think), but being a boy feels wrong.

Lately I've really been embracing my femininity and the fact that I was born female, and it's not that I necessarily think I'm not trans- or at least I don't think so ? I'm just really confused.

But I know that a lot of autistic people, like myself, really struggle with perceptions of gender, especially towards themselves.

And while no one will really be able to help me with my own identity, it would be nice to at least know I'm not alone ? If anyone else relates, I mean.

I hope you guys have a good and perfectly-stimulating day. :) <33 Thanks for listening.

I don't want to make the situation worse, but I will personally say getting yourself away from labels could be good. I personally think in this day and age, people are pushing far too much about gender...

I am autistic, I have personally never even struggled with gender. Not in the slightest.

I think that you should embrace femininity if you were born a girl, yes. And then stop it at that. Because rumination over gender, and other factors, that are well - to be blunt, relative and more of a concept than reality - can only make anxiety, worse.

If you feel angry, that doesn't necessarily make you an angry human being. But in this moment, you felt an emotion and classified yourself as angry. With gender, something more permanent, It's important not to just throw labels around, even if you feel a certain way.

I just think things are best left simple.

Much love. ❤️❤️

A lot of autistic people struggle with gender identity because a huge part of gender identity is a social construct and a good part of social constructs don't make sense. Which is why autistic people struggle with gender because so much of it is imposed upon us by society and we question society.

Be yourself, love yourself! Question what you have been told to be. There is no right way to exist. I'm here for you if you want to talk.
