Autism Spectrum
Hi I'm new here. I just found out I'm on the spectrum. I had these little oddities as a child and as I grew they became glaringly obvious. I really didn't fit in no matter how hard I tried! And now with the results it makes sense. But how do I navigate this?
@intelligentNorth9868 i’m glad you were able to get a diagnosis that offers you some clarity!!
for me, what helps is finding community. being autistic can be isolating, and i find that connecting with other autistic people (whether it’s in person or online) can help me feel seen, and not as isolated or “weird.”
also, knowing and listening to yourself! as in, knowing what types of things make you upset/overwhelmed, and listening to yourself when you feel like you need to leave a situation for your own sake. also, knowing what helps you/calms you down helps a lot!! for me, it helps to write everything down, and sort of create a list i can refer back to when i’m overwhelmed!!
Yes, being different is not normal, and those on the spectrum can try to mask to fit in, but its unhealthy and exhausting! Living an unmasked life with all of our peculiarities and sensitivities will drive some people away. Being more authentically yourself is a good thing! I've love reading Devon Price Unmasking Autism book and finding others who are allies and/or also autistic is refreshing- we seem to instantly connect because we can find friendship and understanding in being neurodiverse and the struggles with social connections among other things.
