Frustrated

I live in an area where people are extremely forward. Eye-contact is a requirement and non-verbal responses (nodding yes) are discouraged.

It takes a long time to break past barriers. Due to the lack of eye-contact, I am regarded with distrust and apprehension. It can take days or weeks to build simple, baseline trust. Whereas a neuro-typical will be regarded with common courtesy from the first few minutes.

It is very draining. It's already difficult to start talking to new people, but knowing that it will take so much longer just to get past a hurdle which shouldn't even exist...well, it's getting more and more difficult to put in that effort.

Kindness isn't enough, here. The area is also very judgemental about the disorder. It's a lot safer to never, ever disclose. Unfortunately, I have no way to leave.

If you can relate, share a story, or offer advice: I would appreciate it! ♡

@CoffeeOwl

I'm sorry this is the case.

Never let anyone else's misjudgements determine your worth.

You continue being you.

And the right people will see that.

Never apologise for it.

All that matters in this world is kindness and being ourselves, don't let them take that from you 😊💚

Honestly that's what we're usually gonna get from some neurotypicals, they don't like these "disorders" because of how we see and think in ways they're not familiar and/or comfortable with and that'll likely never change. I might be thinking of this wrong (and please tell me if I am, I won't feel offended) but either way I hope this helps.
