The struggle for beind understood

This is probably something a lot of us have to contend with but do you ever feel people around you just don't understand what it's like to be you? Most of my life I had very little contact with any others who have ASD. I had one friend growing up who I suspect may have had it due to certain characteristics but never was for sure.

I feel like I've gone through my whole life so far and never got that feeling from someone that says "I see you". "I see what you're going through". I had a Pastor at my church who after finding out I had ASD did a whole bunch of research to understand it. He is one of the few people I've ever had that made an effort to understand and empathize with what I went through. He sadly passed away two years ago.

My parents did the research they could and did the best they can but never have felt truly understood sometimes by them as well. To know what it's like for your mind to constantly be riddled with thoughts. To understand why certain things don't come easy or certain tasks. Why certain simple tasks that maybe a neurotypical person would get don't come so simply. I apologize if this sounds "ranty". I just never wrote down what I felt until now.

I meant the title to show as "The Struggle For Being Understood". I see you can't edit posts easily. Apologies for the typo.

@easySail1800 I can relate to this at a personal level. Many people will view others based on what they feel is "normal". To give a reply is normal, to share your thought is normal etc. But, what is considered normal by some can be a struggle for others and this needs to be understood.

Mental health issues are slowly being studied about and wel,l people are realising there is more to a persons lack of communication than what meets the eyes and empathy and patience is required to understand that person and not judge them. The mindset needs to change.

I personally have faced issues where people do not seem to understand me and I have people close to me who I have failed to understand and it is a real struggle for sure. I hope people are more patient with you and try to understand you better.

@Behopeful7621 Thank you so much for sharing your experiences with me Behopeful! I think things are slowly starting to change in the mental health space and absolutely agree with you on communication styles. I think that contributes to the barriers.

I think no one will ever understand you completely except you. Yes, too much understanding can make uncomfortable for us. I don't try to read people mind, I just simply listen to them. And if they lie or not, its okay for both. They don't harm me anyways 😌
