How to support someone with bipolar
Hello there! My sister was recently diagnosed with bipolar I and I do not know how to support her., especially when it comes to her manic episodes. Do any of you have any suggestions?
@sympatheticPeach5579 hello! first i'd say how thoughtful of you to think about your sister! that's very kind. none of my family members does that haha.... well i guess the first step it's always a good idea to start with google! try to learn everything about bipolar. the more knowledge you have on it, the better you can help! and also 2nd most important thing, ask your sister how can you help 😁 that'll be very helpful for her, if she knows there's someone supporting her! good luck!
Hello! I applaud you for reaching out to the community, you are a great support system already. How old is your sister? I only ask because different stressors can trigger manic or depressive episodes at different stages of your life. You must understand that everyone presents differently, with different symptoms and it is quite common to have a major blowout, to hear I don't love you or I hate you... Please, please, stay by her side and understand it is this illness. She will likely lose things.. her significant other, her friends, her job before she finds a treatment that works for her... Be there in those moments! It's a dark and scary place. Offer to go to therapy with her maybe, most people with bipolar don't stick with therapy for long. I did group therapy with dialectical behavioral therapy several times and I actually use the tools I've learned there to level my head in my moments when I'm experiencing symptoms. I hope this helps.
