I've been diagnosed with bipolar 2 for over 10 years. Recently I feel as if I'm am rapid cycling between depression and mania within a matter of days. Is that possible?

@tinaljmcgee

Hello there tinaljmcgee!

Did you inform your therapist to understand what's going on?

If it's something new then probably it's difficult to manage.

Did you see if lately you experienced specific triggering or stressfull situations?

Wish you to find ways to cope in order to feel a little better.

Got it, then I hope that the clarification can come from experts so that they can also set a path to cope with the new situation.

Best wishes!

@tinaljmcgee I am not an expert, but from what I've read about bipolar disorder, yes, that is possible.

Rapid cycling bipolar is defined as having four or more distinct episodes within a year. This is much slower than the cycling you are experiencing. The term ultra rapid cycling can be used for cycles like yours, as short as 24 hours.

Ultradian bipolar is defined as having cycles shorter than 24 hours. This is even faster than the cycling you are experiencing.

You can find more information by searching the Internet, or by asking whoever made your diagnosis, perhaps. For example, I found this abstract that outlines the terminology: Ultra-Rapid and Ultradian Cycling in Bipolar Affective Illness

Hello! I am diagnosed as bipolar 2 with rapid cycling. At my worst, A typical cycle pattern for me is 2-4 days elevated, a few days of baseline, and 2-4 days of depression. I’d love to chat if you have any more questions or need to talk to someone.
