Relationships with someone who is mentally ill

Although she isn’t diagnosed, I think my best friend might have some kind of bipolar disorder. I’m finding it hard because we’ve been inseparable for 7 years but even now she gets super offended at little comments that I make and is still super sensitive about everything I say even though I’m always on her side. I find myself getting angry and making it worse for us both because I dont want to have to walk on eggshells around her. I’m trying to figure out how to deal with her outbursts without causing a massive argument over something so little but I’m finding it hard not to take offense when she lashes out at me, any ideas?

Hello there! It sounds like you are have a pretty difficult relationship with your best friend right now, especially since she might be suffering from bipolar disorder. I really admire that you are willing to put in an effort in this friendship no matter how difficult it may be.

I'm sorry to tell you this, but as of right now there is no cure for bipolar. At least, not in our present time anyways. I believe someone suffering from bipolar disorder may end up needing life long treatment. However, with the help of mental health professions, therapy, and possibly medication, I'm sure you and your best friend will be able to sustain this friendship. This friendship sounds like it means a lot to you, especially since you've guys ben super close for 7 years.

Unfortunately, since I'm not a mental health professional myself, I cannot really offer you the proper advice you need :(. However, in the time being, I do suggest you go seek a mental health professional and tell him/her about your situation and your best friend. Even better, suggest to her that she sees someone. Keep in mind that she may react poorly to this. If that's the case, either proceed with my first suggestion or reassure her that there is nothing wrong with seeking help. Because bipolar isn't who she is, it's just an issue she is facing right now. Just like how cancer patients aren't cancer, or diabetics aren't just diabetics. Therapy can be expensive, so in that case, would be be covered by your insurance? Or even better, could you possibly receive some financial aid as well? I heard some organizations (such as Better__Help), offers financial aid.

Hope everything goes well with you and your best friend. I wish you all the best.♥️
