Seeking advice! Care plan came in and I'm Confused

Hi all,

A little while ago, I mentioned that I had had a mental health assessment with a mental health nurse (querying potential bipolar). Well, I got the care plan through today and I'm a little confused. There's no diagnosis but they want me to work with someone on managing/regulating my emotions...?

I'm not gonna lie, I'm confused as *** and feel a little bit like they've underminded my concerns and symptoms to 'you need to manage your emotions and it'll get better'. I was honest with them about the type of symptoms I had been experiencing for years (including sometimes seeing who I refer to as the Shadow Man and engaging in reckless and/or pretty risky stuff) - I don't see how managing my emotions can help this.

If you've experienced this, could you perhaps offer any advice?

Hi! First of all, I’m sorry that you’re dealing with a mental health condition, and I’m glad you were able to seek medical attention. While emotional regulation can be helpful when going through any kind of health challenge, I definitely understand where you’re coming from in terms of not feeling like that will solve the entire problem. As someone with undiagnosed chronic pain conditions myself, I have had my fair share of being told to just manage it through physical therapy and it’ll get better, or that since it’s not easily diagnosable it must be all in my head and perhaps I have anxiety instead, etc. It sounds like confirming/denying that original query of bipolar disorder is something that would be helpful and bring clarity for you, is that an option for you? I don’t know enough about your situation to offer any advice, but I think it’s worth thinking about what would help you the most moving forward from this. Do you want a second/third opinion? Is there a certain symptom you are especially hoping to resolve (perhaps the Shadow Man), and if so, is there a certain path you have in mind that you want to ask about (medication, talking to psychiatrist, etc)? If emotional management is something that was medically recommended, it seems reasonable that it might help in some way or another. That being said, you have every right to understand your care plan and feel good about it, and the medical professionals taking care of you are responsible for making sure you are all on the same page. So don’t be afraid to advocate for yourself if something doesn’t feel like it’s working! You know yourself and your situation and have the best perspective on what you can do. Best of luck 😊
