7 Ways to be a Friend to Someone With Psychosis
Zara's Story
My name is Zara and I have first-hand experience of psychosis. My first episode started at just 17, and continued to linger into my early adulthood. Psychosis is difficult, for the person suffering from the illness, and for those around them watching their friend, relative, child, descend into a world that can be terrifying and confusing.
I am well now, personally finding a combination of medication and therapy helpful, but when I was at uni I confided in my flatmates about my mental health. They started to ignore me or say as little to me as possible. It was incredibly stigmatising. This blog is a snapshot of how I believe you can be a friend to someone with psychosis. Friendship and commitment to someone struggling makes a huge difference. You can help someone just by being there for them, and being a consistent and enduring presence.
1. Educate yourself
2. Realise they wont always want to talk
3. Something small goes a long way
4. Encourage healthy living
5. Don't patronize
6. Remember recovery is alwways possible
7. Never give up on them
