Am I wrong?

I'm new to this so I'm not sure if this is the right place but here I go.

So today I told my significant other that I can't do it anymore and at this point I just need to shut down and not care about anything. I got told I was selfish for this. But is it really selfish to shut down so I don't end up hurting myself or trying to hurt myself because I can't deal with everything anymore and it's all too much.

It seems like it's a problem when sensations become too much and I just need to be left alone for awhile so I'm not hurting mentally and physically because of everything. At this point it feels like everything is too much for me to handle and I need to step away one way or another and I'm being told I'm selfish because I'm protecting myself in the only way I can.

Am I wrong for what I'm doing? Is there something else I should be doing?

@SoulBroken0690 I have very similar tendency as you in terms of dealing with issues but relationship involves 2 sides, you and your partner. You can talk to her or him about how you usually handle stress and need some time apart till you are fine in a nice way but hopefully you can be specific on time since if someone needs to wait for something they don't know for how long can be torture for her/him as he/she cares for you. and since you didn't specify what kinda issue, if the issue involves with 2 people, you and him/her, i think he/she has right to know the answer to the problem and discuss it with you. Have you questioned before shutting down the partner that are you trying to not to hurt yourself and her/him as well or only for yourself and it's for the best, not to ruin the relationship?
