A Nobody at Work

Some of you might have been following my posts here in regards to my workplace. A week from today, I had called in sick for work for all of this week. It's Friday now, and none of my colleagues have messaged me to ask about my illness. I had caught a cold from my brother, although finally see some changes in getting better. But it seems no one at work cares about my absence. I've only told one person, someone who sees me as their half-daughter, and this person is not on my team. One of the housekeepers that also work only in the OR.

Here, I call them my colleagues, acquaintances. Yet, when I've been away for a week because I was sick, no one wants to ask me how I'm doing. Here I try to treat everyone with care and kindness, and I'm a nobody to them.

When others have called in sick or left work early because they weren't feeling well.. I'd always send them a text, asking how they are and wish them a quick recovery. Why don't these people treat me the same way? Maybe they'll ask me when I return next Monday. Or should I even have my hopes up that they'd care to ask?

@Jaeteuk

Some people feel more comfortable in reaching out to co-workers if they call in or are out for any reason and some are not sure if they are a bother to text or call or if that is OK.

In some work places i have been at they discourage it thinking it is intrusive.   I agree with you that it is a small gesture and if you have reached out in past they should assume you would be OK with a quick hope you feel better or whatever communication.

i think it is natural to think it is you but often In my experience it was more about the persons comfort level in reaching out .... had a work place where managers had employees reach out and ask very intrusive questions as from the manager it would be inappropriate ... after that the whole place was discouraged from even the look of asking for private information etc.

At least some of the nurses asked how I was feeling upon my return the day before. I didn't hold my coughs in, they could be proof that I was actually sick with the cold. But it has been tiring, feeling fatigued when I work. I've even slowed down my walking pace. My coughs make me feel short of breath, so my energy is also being drained more quickly. I'll be working the late shift for the rest of the month.. and I'll see my doctor again tomorrow, see if there's other medications/inhaler I can take during the day. The Locum prescribed me a new inhaler, but it's only twice a day.. morning and bedtime. So, seeing my own GP tomorrow, I'll ask her if that one is right for me or if I need something else in addition. I would also like to have her listen to my lungs, I've always been just able to taste the phlegm in the back of my throat, but not once was I able to cough it out. It's annoying. I should also tell her, I had a nosebleed last week when I was blowing my nose. It was scary, dripping blood into the sink from my right nostril. Took probably 5 minutes for it to stop.

Anyways, it was nice to know that I was missed by the nurses. Not my colleagues, but that's good enough.
