Fired From First Job
I have been working a for company for roughly over a year. Today I have been let go citing performance issues. My role was to act as a floater and when the company was entering declining figures I was scared my position might be compromised. I was right and apparently there was increasing animosity from co-workers for which I didn’t know.
Right now I am having trouble processing my emotions as I felt was doing everything expected from me but what is even more worrisome is the fact that I don’t have a job after I am done with military training. I didn’t like the fact that I wasn’t given an opportunity to talk with my leadership, and they just let me go for underperforming whereas I have been performing to the best of my ability.

It is a situation people do not prepare for or talk about..... being fired for anything or even the nicer term laid off etc takes a toll on a person.
It is hard to not take personally and co-worker regardless if you know or not if business was going down people are sharks and try to shine light on others in hopes to save their selves. If a company needs to trim staff they will chose anyone they think they can .... tardy people they have looked the other way for ever suddenly become ... a target or anything else.
under performance or any term like that is vague at best and supervisors or leaders do not want to face someone whom they just let go.
Think of it as a new direction or chance to change move forward do not dwell on past ..... i did and was angry and bitter for too long when it was not personal and in the end was a good move for me.

Thank you for your reply. What was your pathway to overcome getting laid off? This is my first time getting fired let alone my first college level job. It is hard to think that maybe I am not cut out for the corporate life.

I applied for other things and in fact a different industry then i was aiming for found i fit much better.......
.there are literally millions of companies and a simple layoff should not discourage you at all. Many successful people have experienced the same type thing. like i said no one tells you how easy it is to tun that into self doubt.

I'm glad you've reached out. There are many times that businesses will need to cut costs and labor costs are a big amount of the cost of their budgets. So they look at several factors many times as are already mentioned, as well as who was hired last is many times the first to cut. But rather than lay someone off, they may fire them minimal reasons or excuses.
What I've learned over the years in business, is to gather great references from those you work with and supervisors that you have a great relationship with. Also, I've always had my foot in the door with a non-profit as a volunteer because volunteer references look great on resumes when you are going for jobs as well as graduate school if you think about doing that.
As far as being your first job into college, getting fired happens. Try not to let it stress you out. You have many more opportunities ahead of you for employment. You college may have a career assessment and they would be able to tell you what kind of career you are most talented or interested in based on your skills, talents and interests. This could help you in looking at jobs as you work your way through college, and with that, building up your work resume. Sometimes you can get jobs at college which you can build your resume with and have steady employment there as well.
Another type of work that might be available, is temporary agencies. They assign you to jobs at multiple locations for a set number of shifts. Sometimes the temporary shifts can lead to a full-time position with the temporary assignment.
Whatever your experience has been at a job, note the skills you learned from the job to add to your resume, even if you don't list the job, because your skills, experience, and your work history all speak for you. As a college student, they don't expect you to have a significant work history, but as you go to graduate, you should have some work history. The more experience you have, the better that looks.
I'm sorry you lost your job but I hope you will take heart and find one that that makes you more satisfied than the last one.
