Promises broken, job has become Toxic

I’ve had a lot of good and bad work experiences and environments and I very much understand and appreciate that bad environments can quickly become toxic and untenable. I’m afraid that is exactly what has happened to my current job.

My previous employer went similarly- good to great to good to awful to “if I don’t get out of here they will take my soul….” so I was thrilled by the new opportunity at a new employer- and the best part was many of my colleagues were my previous colleagues. New but not unknown. I was working for an old boss and happy about it. Until they laid him off.

Now I’m stuck here, having signed a contract to stay at least a year or be required to pay back my signing bonus. The market I also rough out there — no desire to truly compete against the people who absolutely need a job when I have one. But it’s becoming increasingly obvious that what I was brought here to do is no longer necessary.

My previous boss and I had a plan to change systems- so I spent the first several months focusing on transition. Now that he’s gone, the person I report to doesn’t think we will do that - ever. “No support for it”

I have been asked to hire for a couple of new positions. Everyone I interview and move forward is rejected by the guy above me for reasons I can’t even understand… we have very different perspectives on the jobs but these people will be reporting to me so I don’t know why he has been so hard on them.

I am this close to quitting…. But really need to have something lined up first. I’m the “breadwinner”’ in my marriage. I’m just miserable.

trying to find a way to get through it.

@pioneeringChestnut8323 Thank you for sharing your situation with us. It sounds like you have had some difficult changes at work recently that have added stress. I can understand why you would feel frustrated having your ideas and choices questioned after putting so much effort into planning the transition. Maintaining well-being during challenging times is so important. You don't deserve to be miserable. You have all of us here to support you. What kinds of support systems do you currently have outside of work that help you cope during this stressful time?

Work is a changing thing and many people become ticked that it is not what it use to be or what rosy thing they portrayed at one time....   this happens to many people co-workers that made things good/ bosses- managers change and sometimes it is the vision from someone up higher....

If you can leave and pay back a signing bonus i think you would feeling stuck and dwelling on it makes it harder each day to even show up.....i have been in situations where i agreed to stay x amount of time and found it awful half way through...... the signing bonus and stay a year is a clue as to needing people to stay with them perhaps it would be better for them to deal with the atmosphere that makes people want to leave instead of holding hostage for a year....

i worked thru these type things literally one day at a time ... looked for anything even one bright spot in each day and when time was up i sometimes even stayed longer because i was able to keep my feelings in check.... i have run into far more people who jumped ship and regret they did not stay the year or with that job because the next place was not as they thought either...   change your response and expectations then decide

face it the interview process is like a first date .........both sides  potential employee/ company  showing their best.... not saying  "this place sucks when can you start? "

Well… I guess parts of the situation were resolved for me.

on Friday morning I was informed that my position was eliminated… effective immediately… and I am no longer employed in that toxic environment. Or any other.

I got a bit of severance so I am taking some time off to recover and grieve — but not much because I do know how tough the market is right now. The good news is I no longer have to worry about paying them back - or when I will leave. and I’m honestly relieved to be done with them.

I just really wasn’t ready to be unemployed. It’s a blow to the mental health and wellbeing- and household budget for sure.
