Should I stay or go
I find joy in helping. So I'd go to work and just help.
This was okay for them at first but now it seems not. They've actually made announcements about working off the clock. No one else does this so it was obvious why it was mentioned.
Not being able to do this hurts me to my core.
I'm not sure I want to work for this company.

It would be nice if they would be upfront and speak to you if they need to instead of general announcements that you feel were directed at you. Being clear is better then assumption.
The reality is labor laws/ rules are often the reason. These rules vary greatly by what country, state etc you may live and work in. These set up for so employers do not require people to come in and do extra.
Rules are ignored everyday. Why not just let a person help?

That is often the case people see other rules broken or ignored so why not.... Until something changes.
It maybe someone said something. I have seen what you are referring to a person did a few small things as they often came in before shift started. they also used time to network with senior staff etc.
Other employees who saw this person helping in small ways, felt this person seemed favored, so employees felt it was expected to work off clock. Someone made a complaint and turned the company I worked for in and they paid a big fine.
What happens behind the scenes can be different then we think.
... I really can't argue against that.
It just sucks. I have to find some other outlet and my personal situation has made this difficult for me.
