Temporary Additional Staff

One colleague will be going for her Maternity Leave soon, another colleague has already been accepted to work her temporary relief line, which means that colleague's line is up for grabs. Working in a Hospital, all full-time positions are based on Seniority (number of hours worked). Me, being in the 6000's only, I didn't even bother applying. I know some past colleagues I used to work with (the department below the OR), have applied, and they have 20,000+ hours under their belt. Knowing who is the highest seniority down there, I'm hoping it's the girl I like that comes up. If it's the second-highest seniority lady that comes, I'll literally be in trouble. We've been on bad terms a couple of years ago, she got me in trouble, was investigated, but my Union was on my side. But, she holds grudges. We haven't spoken since, and I could see the hatred in her eyes. So, if I'm needing to work with her, my work will become very depressing. The other bad part is, that lady is close to 2 other colleagues of mine, they are basically buddies. So, I can imagine that they'll gang up on me as bullies.

So, fingers crossed that it's the nice girl that comes up. No one has said who has been hired, but I'm really hoping it's her. The Line should start next week, if not, the week after, at the latest. Need to start her training. She will be trained in all 3 shifts, but will eventually just work the early morning shift. It's more important for her to be trained the early morning shift, and the late shift (my shift). As it is for some reason, always the early morning shift that needs to do overtime, when the late shift calls in sick. I never understood why it's not the other morning staff that stays for the overtime though. Why would you have the person starting at 6:30am, stay overtime, until 6 or 7pm; and not have the person starting at 7:30am to stay overtime?

Anyways, maybe I'll try and ask around today at work, to see if anyone has a clue who coming to join our team.

@Jaeteuk

Hello there Jaeteuk!

I understand you're feeling stressed for not knowing who'll be the new co-worker, if the person holding grudges will show up, it could be less easy than having the other friendly coworker.

You are dealing with a hard job that requires focus and a lot of energy, i applaud you for that 👏💜

Fingers crossed the cool coworker will be hired to work with you and please keep us updated!

A co-worker went to ask our Manager at the end of her shift yesterday. She returned and told me that it is the cool person joining our team. I immediately messaged her to welcome her. I asked if she'll be starting next week with training, she replied with she's currently on vacation. So, maybe that's a no? Maybe starting the week after? What a relief. Now, I hope she gets trained properly. Need more staff to know how to work as a team, and not just care about their own main tasks.

So, the girl going on Maternity Leave, her last day of work got moved to today. She was supposed to work until end of September, but her doctor says she had to stop working now. Since we're short-staffed, another colleague on vacation and the lady that will be covering her Leave is in an intense last minute training with her, yesterday and today. So, yesterday, my Manager asked me to work a 12-hr shift today. I only agreed because it's a Friday. Next week, while the colleague is still on vacation, I'll be doing 10-hr shifts instead. I think I'll be too exhausted to work 12-hr shifts for the entire week.

So, with the additional staff, looks like she won't be starting until September.. not exactly a good time, because one colleague will be gone for a 3-week vacation, as she goes to Greece with her husband and we are back to running all 6 Operating Rooms (this summer, we've been running 5 Operating Rooms with the occasional 4). They are planning to train her in all the positions, including the office. So, there's a chance that I might need to continue working overtime hours in September too. As the other staff would be busy training, she might not he able to get her own work done. I offered to do 11-hr shifts, just until the new addition get acquainted with our work. Will have to see if my colleague agrees and if our Manager thinks it's necessary for me to start my shift earlier to lend a hand.

Manager is on vacation again, returning Aug. 21st, she said she'll ask the colleague if she's okay working the mornings for those 3 weeks in September, so she can train the new person. I was originally scheduled to cover the colleague going on vacation. That's another story though.

@Jaeteuk

How are you managing with the changes and what impact it is having on your scheduling and your energy level?

How is the atmosphere at work with everyone? Is it going well for you with the coworker going early to maternity leave?

This week, with one colleague on her second week of vacation, we're short-staffed. So I'm working overtime, doing 10+ hour shifts this week. Manager had asked me to keep working overtime for the remaining of the month.

It's very tiring, as the other colleague is of no help. And she doesn't work the overtime, and just ended up working the the early morning shift, but not work that one extra hour that her original shift would've ended by. So, I end up doing all the running around.

Sleep hasn't been ideal either. I usually am able to sleep a maximum of 6 hours, but the past week or so, I have been waking up before 5am. I purposely sleep at midnight, because if I slept earlier, I'll be awake after 6 hours.

The additional staff will start in September, and I've already offered to work overtime. I'm always the considerate one amongst my colleagues. Not everyone appreciates it though.

@Jaeteukr

That sounds like a lot of hours, but it also sounds like from what you've written that you're handling it but it would be helpful if your co-worker would help out a little past their shift.

I hope your days go as easy as they can for you while you are working all these long shifts!

That colleague doesn't help much anyways.. honestly, it doesn't really make a difference if she stayed that extra hour.. but, it just seems more ideal if she stayed for her regular shift hours instead.

At least this Friday, I'll take a break from working a 10+ hour shift, as I have a doctor's appointment in the morning, I may not be able to start sooner than my original shift of starting at noon. But then again, I might end up needing to wake up early to drive to my appointment during rush hour times.

Thank you, I hope I can sleep better for the rest of this week and over the weekend to recharge.
