The Ideal Team Player Assessment
Recently at work, I took a training about the Ideal Team Player. I want to explain what an ideal team player is and what qualities they possess. I will also include a short self-assessment, which you are welcome to share your results for each category or keep it to yourself.
Knowing the qualities of an effective team player is important. These three qualities a person needs to be an integral part of an effective team are humility, hunger, and Smart.
Being humble does not mean you think less of yourself or you put yourself down, but rather you think of yourself less. To be humble means that you focus on what will best serve the team and focus on how the team worked together to achieve a goal rather than vying for attention and recognition. You are willing to share credit, emphasize team over self, and define success collectively rather than individually.
Hunger in this context means hungry to learn, hungry to succeed, to serve. This means you have passion and desire to become better. Hunger is a form of self-motivation that compels people to keep growing and improving over time. Hungry people seek mentorship and opportunities to grow.
When it comes to smart, we aren't talking about "book smart" but rather emotional intelligence and interpersonal skills. Smart people know how to ask good questions, listen to what others are saying, and stay engaged in conversations intently.
You can read more about different team player personas depending on what qualities you have here
The self-assessment I mentioned can be found here
If you read the article, do you have any stories to share about work and anyone who fit one of those personas?
If you want to share about your results, what do you have to work on?
@Remina
I'm not sure I wish to be the ideal team member. That seems like an unrealistic goal to me. I'm more interested in just being happy at work, believing that being happy will maximise my productivity and make me a better team member. I like the philosophy of the people at Better At Work.

Whats that like?

Fantastic post. The concepts of humility, hunger, and emotional intelligence ("smart") are so insightful for understanding what makes an ideal team player, and being a team player is vital to the 7 Cups community. On the Community Team, we specifically embrace HHA: Hungry, Humble, and Accountable. All these qualities are the backbone of the compassionate and supportive environment we strive to create at 7 Cups. Thanks for sharing this <3
