Trouble Coping with Disrespect in Workplace
Hey all, thanks for listening 🙂
I started back at an old job recently, unaware that they've since implemented a no fragrance policy. When I showed up for my shift today, introducing myself to a few team members I hadn't met yet, my shift lead walked past me and started giving out about the cologne I was wearing, saying I need to "go way lighter on my scent" and gesturing for me to stay away from her. She went on to make an example out of me & make a PSA to everybody right then and there about how colognes are not allowed for this reason and everybody needs to comply. I felt incredibly embarrassed that my coworkers' first impression of me was being labeled the 'stinky guy' in front of God and everyone... 🤦♂️ I really would have come out of this situation feeling more "coached" rather than shamed if she'd chosen to broach the matter one-on-one, in a private conversation.
Because of this and some other impolite behavior from my coworkers, I'm starting to dread keeping on at this job. Just today I was holding a headset that that same shift lead wanted, so she said "gimme that" and snatched it out of my hands. That isn't how adults ask for things, right? I also got sent home today for wearing a shirt that is technically charcoal and not black. You would think for someone just starting out, they might simply say "you need to wear a darker black tomorrow" instead of removing me from the team, making everyone else's job harder, too. Am I crazy?? Or does the environment seem super punitive here?
The hardest thing to get accustomed to is that every staff member has their own method of preparing the same beverage, so, if they see me preparing one the way someone other than that specific person taught me to do it, they won't hesitate to let me know (or, just take the order away from me and throw it in the trash, then make it themselves). I get a lot of conflicting input. I also get flack for floating outside my assigned station of the restaurant when I have downtime to help someone who looks like they need assistance, saying that I interrupt their flow unless they've asked for it. But when my station is busy, people don't hesitate to come start getting my stuff, even when I haven't asked for help (because my assigned learning area at this time is supposed to be sequencing multiple orders at the same time).
Sorry to trauma dump! It just hurts my feelings that my teammates don't seem to regard me as my own person who can do the things they're expecting of me if they'd only give me room to try, and coach me with respect rather than beating me down.
Any words of wisdom? I'm never one to leave jobs willy-nilly, but now I'm thinking I honestly wouldn't stick with this job if my health insurance didn't depend on it. I'm going to try gently letting the shift lead know how the way she handled things caused me to feel, tomorrow; I hope it goes well. I'm anxious because she seems to enjoy confrontation with both staff and customers 😥 🙏4me
@peachhemlock1313 I'm sorry you've been mistreated and disrespected in the workplace. This is definitely not a good environment and you definitely didn't deserve what happened to you today. It's rude and unprofessional. I'm proud of you for being bold enough to stand up and letting the person know how you feel. While people are grown and no one is going to cater to hurt feelings, you definitely have the right to express the mistreatment and stand up for yourself. Nothing you did warrants this kind of treatment. It's a tough situation, but don't let these kind of people get in the way of making your money! You were hired for a reason, so let your work ethic shine! Learn, refresh up on the company policies, work hard, be a team player, and do what you gotta do. It's business. Handle your business and thrive. You got this! 💪 I hope things get better for you and that you're treated with respect. No one has to like you per se but there's thing called human decency. It's just human decency to know not to treat someone the way you were treated. Again, sorry you experienced this. Feel better. Good luck to you and keep on earning that paper. 💲💲💲💲Take care!

it is not you the whole way they addressed things was not professional. We can hope they will not get worse after a professional attempt to discuss the situation with supervisor.
It sounds like some have control issues creating small infractions into bigger issues.
