Work Stress Dump

Just want to vent about a colleague and get it out of my chest.

He's working at an operational office, whereas I am at headquarter, however our paths keep crossing regardless how much I wish differently. It is mentally draining me to deal with him.

He's the type of person that often mess things up, but somehow can get away with things. Because most people, including me, just take a deep breath. We are too exhausted already to deal with his shit (pardon my language).

Furthermore, nothing is ever simple with him. If he has to do something, he will ask tons of questions before he even tries to find out himself. He's not new, he's smart and he's not a junior. I'm sure he can find the information himself. He's draining everyone who has to deal with him.

If no one answer the questions, he just leave it. And when the time comes where that thing is needed, he said, I have ask these and no one answer. BECAUSE WE DON'T HAVE THE TIME AND ENERGY TO BABYSIT YOU!

I am tired, burnout enough and I don't want to add more negativity in my life. I want to avoid being in any team with him, but I keep having to deal with him. This has created work stress on me.

Today is one of those days where I had to met him for a project. So... sorry for the negative vibe!

I'll probably do this again tomorrow since I'll meet him again tomorrow.

It's been a little over a month now, how are things going with this colleague of yours now?

I have some colleagues at work that seem to be favoured by their supervisors/managers. No matter how many people had complained how they work, and the lack of work they are doing, they are still working in the same position and continuing with their normal habits. Some are very stubborn too, and they don't like it when we try and inform/teach them the correct way to do things. Yet, I have another colleague who only does the minimal tasks required for her position, and does nothing else to help the team. When she does an extra task or two, she'll brag about and make it sound like she's doing us a favour (rather than, it's part of what we call "teamwork"). My Manager finally noticed the lack of work she does and asked me for my input. So, I'm just going to wait and see how my Manager will handle it.

As with your case, seeing how you're not the only person who feels that he needs to be babysitted all the time, how are others dealing with him? Are there techniques that you and other colleagues can share in a way that, even you're dealing with him, it won't tire you out?

It's difficult working with someone who tends to get away with things and it can be very frustrating. If it's the norm for that person, we just need to learn to see it objectively and neutrally. We need to accept that is how some people are, and we just need to focus on our own work. As long as we've done our part, what the other person does or does not do, is not something that we should worry about~

@rainApple It sounds like you are feeling tired and burned out from having to take on your colleague's job responsibilities as well as your own, and from being blamed when he doesn't do his job. These resources may be helpful to you in setting boundaries with job responsibilities and managing work-related stress: https://www.7cups.com/boundaries/ https://www.7cups.com/work-related-stress/ Feel free to message me anytime if you would like to talk more about this. I hope you find rest and peace in your life.

@wonderfulSoul4237 and @Jaeteuk

Thank you for the supports and link.

I finally decided to minimize the interaction (to zero if possible). So far, that's the best solution (although not the best condition). And it gives me a peace of mind.

This is a real eye opener for me since I'm new to a job and I've always been asking questions, sometimes repeating them after a week or so. I'm not him, but I'm really sorry. I'm doing my best, even trying to figure things out myself, but sometimes I have to ask questions if something is heavily unclear.

Questions are almost always expected, especially when you're starting a new job. So, don't be afraid to ask questions. No matter how stupid they may seem, it's better to understand the proper way to do something, rather than doing it incorrectly. It's also okay if you're asking repeated questions. Clarifying is a good thing. Be confident with the answers given that you'll be able to do the task. Good luck!~

Hey there! Man, this really sounds so frustrating. I understand what it's like to feel like your energy is being drained by peers you don't necessarily like. Sometimes, it helps to realize that...ultimately, there's not much we can do to change their behavior. While this is an unfortunate fact to reconcile with, it's good knowing that you know yourself and you know you are doing your job properly. It's a possibility that he will learn from his mistakes and recognize that his behavior is bad for the workplace. And if he doesn't...in the grand scheme of things, it's okay sometimes to let those things go. It's better to spend your energy elsewhere and not on him. Take it with a grain of salt. You seem to be a hard worker, and you deserve to be proud of your own work ethic! we are all proud of you (:
