Ooo my family is Indo Fijian! To be honest, I've never been to Fiji or experienced much of the food. However, the ones I've tried are super tasty. I might not describe these properly so please, bear with me.

According to my mom, there's a Fijian way to make Bhindi. In India, Bhindi (okra) isn't usually cooked all the way (it's a little slimy) but, the way my mom and her side of the family makes it waits until it turns to a dark color.

In a lot of Fijian style sabzis as well they do not dissolve the tomato, which is quite different from India (I've been saying India this whole time but, I should probably say Punjabi). The tomato is fully visible in most dishes still.

The sweets are also so yum! I know that there's a different version of gulab jamun and barfi there and there's also this coconut sweet that can be found in multiple colors.

This is all I can think of from the top of my head at the moment.

Indo-Fijians are citizens of Fiji of South Asian descent, primarily descending from over 60,000 indentured laborers (Girmityas) brought by British colonial rulers between 1879 and 1916 to work on sugar plantations. They constitute a major ethnic group in Fiji, largely practicing Hinduism, speaking Fiji Hindi, and forming a distinct, culturally blended community. 🤗

Oops, forgot to mention that sabzi means vegetable and I usually refer to dishes as this. I recommend that everyone searched up Fiji sweets! They look so delightful and if you can get your hands on it you will be so happy. At this point, I prefer these sweets over the Indian ones.

So, I searched it up and apparently the coconut sweet is a type of barfi. Which honestly makes a lot of sense to me. So, it's just coconut barfi.

That's amazing, I'm Indo-Caribbean and I've been to Fiji and I find the food similar because we have similar histories of both experiencing indentureship and being multiple generations outside of India. I love the Indo-Fijian food I ate there 😊

Nama

17696920072243328565932427666505_1769692043.jpg

Indigenous to Fiji, nama is a type of edible seaweed mainly harvested in pristine, shallow waters. Because of its unique shape, formed of tiny, crunchy spheres, it is also known as sea grapes. In Fiji, it is commonly eaten raw, as a fresh vegetable or a garnish and is often combined with lemon juice, chili, and fermented coconut.

As it is considered a delicacy, it can be merely paired with coconut milk. Nama is also an important commercial produce, often sold at local markets.
