The ability to speak many languages enables you to have a deeper connection with another culture. How many languages do you speak?

@comfortableNight4463

I speak (in order of fluency): English, Hebrew, Esperanto, Spanish, and Russian. The last two are definitely going through lots of work and practice, so stay tuned! First two are pretty much fluent, and Esperanto is good enough to be sort-of fluent.

@ShneurZ Amazing! I guess that makes you a polygot. Which is the hardest to learn?

I think I still have lots of work before I can be a real polyglot, haha. I think Russian was definitely hardest to learn! Six grammatical cases, up to eighteen different ways to say every adjective, and verb conjugations that are often not so regular are really hard! What language(s) do you speak or are learning?

I can speak English, Hindi and two of the regional languages of India: (Marathi & Konkani) and I can speak a bit of Japanese but I'm yet to acheive fluency there.

English as my first language, Finnish as my second after moving here. I don't learn languages easy, so being surrounded by it has helped learning my second one.

How do you find Thai? Is it difficult? I've heard learning the writing system can be challenging. I'm also learning Japanese and sort of Korean. Which is your favorite out of the three you are currently learning?

@Smily1225 It is super challenging. I took for six months only to learn the most basic (alphabets).

I speak English, Spanish, some French, some Portuguese, and I'm learning Japanese (and maybe Korean). In the past, I've studied Mandarin, German, and Russian, and also a bit of Dutch, Cantonese, Icelandic, and Hebrew.

I really tried to get into German. I took one class in school but it just felt like a college class. The teacher wasn't bad, but she was American we didn't do any cultural activities. It was mostly grammar and speaking with classmates, many of whom were not that interested in learning German but just needed the credits. I did like learning the grammar because it seemed like the rules were pretty rigid, unlike Japanese or Spanish where word order is a bit more fluid.

I was interested in Icelandic because I liked the way it sounded, but there weren't many resources. I was also new to language learning at the time so I didn't really have any strategies. The grammar was tough, though.

I think the best tip for learning any language is to enjoy it, like remind yourself why you're learning it and make it fun. I've found it hard to progress in Mandarin because my motivation for learning it has changed from what it was when I first started, but I can spend hours on learning Japanese because it's fun.

Switching up learning methods is good too. I think it really helps to find out what methods work best for you and then seek out the resources. I like grammar and I also like listening to languages, so sometimes I'll do grammar practice and other times I'll listen to a podcast or watch a movie in the target language. Currently I'm trying to improve my speaking ability in Japanese. I know more grammar than I speak with, which is natural, but since I'm still at a lower level, I feel that I should catch myself up. I take lessons on italki to find teachers and practice speaking and it's been really helpful. Also YouTube has a lot of great content for learning languages if you know what to look for. It can be in the form of podcasts, grammar explanations, kid shows, music, travel blogs, cooking videos, makeup tutorials, anything that's interesting to you.

@Smily1225 Thank you so much for the advice. I agree, its important to immerse yourself and explore the culture and language in various ways in order to improve your fluency. Thanks again for sharing. This is very useful!

@Smily1225 How about Russian? Does it hard?

User Profile: Smily1225
Smily1225 January 27th, 2022

I think Russian was medium difficulty, almost like how German was. I didn't get very far with either language but my Russian teacher was more fun than my German teacher and j liked the class more. I definitely have enough of a foundation in both German and Russian if I ever choose to study them again.

English is my first language, and I am pretty fluent in Spanish. I am also learning Arabic, along with some Italian and Russian. I know very little of the last two especially, but I’m trying to learn! Besides Spanish, Arabic is my favorite, but it is also VERY hard compared to the others. Someday I want to be a full polyglot!
