Mardi Gras — What is it?
Mardi Gras — What is it?
Mardi Gras is a super cool event celebrated in New Orleans.
How did it originate?
According to the Mardi Gras official website, the holiday started in medieval Europe. It went through Rome and Venice in the 17th and 18th centuries, and then went to France.
When was the first Mardi Gras?
March 2, 1699 was when Jean Baptiste Le Moyne Sieur de Bienville (quite the mouthful!) named some ground he found “Pointe du Mardi Gras” and celebrated the first Mardi Gras. A little bit later, in 1702, Bienville established “Fort Louis de la Louisiane” which is where America’s first Mardi Gras was celebrated.
In 1718, New Orleans was established by Bienville. Soon after, Mardi Gras was celebrated all over New Orleans. The festivities developed over the years into the parades we celebrate today.
What are some Mardi Gras traditions?
The big things that Mardi Gras is known for are the fun music, big parades, and picnics. The signature colors are purple, green, and gold. Many people like to dress in silly costumes and wear long beaded necklaces.
If you attend Mardi Gras, don’t forget to pack a large bag! The parades shower beads and trinkets that you’ll want to catch.
