🧘♀️🍃 Mindful Creativity: Try Flower & Leaf Shadow Drawing This Summer 🌞✏️
I recently tried shadow drawing after seeing the idea on social media, and I really enjoyed it, so I wanted to share it here in case it speaks to you too!
It’s simple and calming. All you need is:
☀️ sunlight
📄 a piece of paper
✏️ something to draw with
🍃 and something from nature — like a leaf, flower, or even a twig that catches your eye.
You just place the object so that its shadow falls onto your paper, then gently trace the shape it creates. The sunlight does the composing, you just follow its outline.
I used a dried-out plant leaf. Because the sun was bright, I couldn’t see my drawing clearly, which made me focus more on the feeling of drawing than the outcome. I just let myself enjoy the moment, and in the end, I was pleasantly surprised by the result, even though that wasn’t the goal at all! 🙂
I used a pencil, but you can use whatever you have: pen, pastels, even paint. And since the leaf was already dry and delicate, I picked it up and taped it next to my drawing. I think it turned out really lovely. 🍃
What I appreciated most was how grounding it was. It didn’t take long, but it helped me slow down, be present, and really notice the nature around me. It made me look at plants differently, not just as decorations, but as shapes, patterns, textures.
You can do this outside in a garden or park, but it works just as well with a potted plant on a balcony or windowsill. It could even be a sweet activity to try while on holiday, a creative way to make a little memory with your surroundings.
If you’re looking for something gentle and grounding to do this summer, shadow drawing might be just the thing. And if you try it, I’d love to hear how it felt for you! 🌞🌱
