TW: hospitalization

I find I have a major gripe with the ~mental health system~ as a whole. You can't EVER talk about your actual dark thoughts, about wanting to sh, actually sh-ing, or wanting to, y'know... and if you do, you run the risk of getting shipped off to the nearest psychiatric hospital where you'll have every material and social comfort taken from you and be treated like a zoo animal by the staff with no autonomy. Hospitalization was incredibly damaging to my mental health. When I was in crisis, what I needed was a calm, quiet, familiar space where I could come and go as I pleased, be supported, and not have everything but the literal clothes on my back be taken from me. I didn't go outside for a week straight for pete's sake.

Everyone claims to be supportive and encourage you to ~seek help~!!!!! If you're thinking dark things, but it's like I get punished if I do. I'm actually discouraged to seek help because of the threat of institutionalization hanging over my head like a sack of wet concrete. Either that or I'm going to have more medication forced on me by a doctor who's only known me for 20 minutes. Can I please not be punished for being mentally ill? Please?

@TiredHerbalist

You have made very good points

because of the false belief that even if a person has one dark thought we must panic and treat them as a threat is WHY so many do not seek help. Along with finding help and time is a battle in itself.

Mental health is not something you can see just anyone for 15 minutes and get a drug or diagnosed liek strep throat .... one needs to build trust and familiarity to speak openly and say things that may even be somewhat disturbing.......

when ever we see something where someone disturbed acted out or did something awful and calls for more mental health treatment maybe they should improve how they do it before calling for more ineffective practice.

That is actually a wonderful point. I never reached the hospitalization point, but the fear was huge. I think that it kept me from healing faster.

The challenge is that there is so much need right now and so few therapists and specialists. So everyone overreacts to keep people alive.@TiredHerbalist

@TiredHerbalist Exactly. This is why I'm afraid to "reach out". People don't know how to actually be helpful...and I don't blame the common person because all the advice out there says to break confidence, tell everyone, call the cops, lock you away and put it on your record if you even say you've had THOUGHTS. Like you just say the mere word and you're sent away. Out of sight, out of mind. People don't want to get their hands dirty with people like us. And then you might come back and find your little revelation has put a permanent stain on your life and relationships. But sometimes you really just want to tell someone...ya know? You're supposed to be able to confide in people who claim to care. But I guess it's just too taboo. Despite all the "uwu mental health awareness" out there.
