A progressive healing
When feeling depressed you feel that you want to avoid the pain immediatly. When you find a helpful strategy its easy for the brain to overwish the effect of the strategy. People easily think that their depressed will disappearover a day. They are hoping that. The pain feels so unbareable that the brain is desperate. But thats a myth. Your depression is your lifestyle - you thoughts, emotions and behavior - and changing your lifestyle takes time and effort. Overcoming a depression is a progressive healing - not an immediate responseto a single strategy. Its takes time and dynamic use of different strategies. Depression is a complex disease which is healed by complex methods. Believing that you will overcome your depression over a day or with a single strategy will only make you disappointed and even more depressed. It can make you quit trying to heal. The effect can be that you feel helpless and your situation hopeless. You cant do nothing because nothing helps. Therefor its unneccesary to try overcoming depressions. This is how you may think. Its really important to understand that healing is a progressive process. Then you can avoid these disappointments and mental relapses.
I completely agree with you and I am really glad you decided to share this. When I first realized how terrible my decision was, I wanted it to get better overnight and I did anything and everything to get rid of all of the negative thoughts, but it only made things worse. I became self-destructive for 7 years...that's a lot of time I won't get back, but I made efforts to change my entire lifestyle around and so far, it has been going really well. I believe it's been almost 2 years of actual happiness and not feeling like I'm worthless. It's great, but it does take time. There will be days when you feel really down and depressed, but pick yourself right back up! Thanks once again!
I feel myself suffering with depression a lot lately. I graduated college a year ago with a great degree but my mom got cancer so I came home and took care of her. Now, a year later, I keep trying to apply to jobs and don't have the experience they want (even though I work in a hospital as a nursing assistant and have had a job for awhile.... Just not in the right area). I can't seem to find anything and everyday seems harder and harder. I'm not my peppy self anymore and all my friends have moved on with their jobs in new states and places. I got close to this guy and we started exclusively seeing each other and now he tells me he wants to just focus on his career after 6 months and me saying I love you. I feel so lost and don't want to keep wasting time feeling so down but don't know where to begin. Please offer me advice on how you overcame your struggles. Cheers.
Hey darling, I'm really sorry to hear about your mom and I hope everything is okay now. When I was going through depression, I started doing a variety of drugs, hanging out with people who would do those drugs with me, and I even dropped out of University and quit my job. I was also in a very abusive relationship. Well, I was put on medication for a while and I decided to stop taking those. I don't recommend doing that unless you speak to your doctor about that, but it helped me to see clearly. I stopped taking all drugs and I completely stopped drinking. I went back to school for something completely different (although I will go back to University when k save up). I cut off all of the negative connections in my life. I started focusing more towards what made me happy. This included sports, movies, learning, etc. I also accepted the help of others to find myself a job at that point and it was one of the best decisions I ever made. Sometimes you just need to ask for help.
