Can depression cause memory loss. It is a problem remmebering things and studying is a lot harder for me.

I believe depression can cause memory loss and it has been known to cause brain fog.

I don't know about memory loss, but depression and mood disorders in general are often linked to cognitive abilities disruption. There are numerous articles and people's experiences when you google 'cognitive symptoms of depression'.
I can tell from my own experience that depression has made me slow down a bit. I've had problems studying, focusing my thoughts, reading a paragraph or even finishing a sentence when I talk to someone. So there is something about it.
Memory loss is not a direct symptom of depression, no. But depression can hinder certain cognitive functions like long-term memory, meaning that, yes, you may find it more difficult to remember things. That combined with the common symptom of negative, distracting thoughts can make studying a nightmare.
