Depression - STAY POSITIVE

Depression. It's bad. Very bad. But is it that bad that it's become all we talk about? Where has all the positivity gone? Sure, talking about it does help, but in my bad days I found out something:

Having depression is horrible, but swimmingin my depression was one million times worse. I'm telling you: You're beautiful (your shape, you hair, your face, your everything). You're talented and amazing at and in everything. The way to get out of your depression is to believe it, every beautiful thing about you - because it's true. And I know, it's not always about insecurities - sometimes it's experiences. Well, when you think back to them, remind yourself this: those memories are history - Live in the now. It's not easy, believe me I know, but thinking about it too much, only makes matters worse.no

To all you people experiencing things in the now, I know you're going through a hard time, but don't be afraid of contacting the right people when it gets serious - they're only here to help. I'm not saying talking to someone is wrong, it's great: a problem shared is a problem halved. However, don't do it to the extent that your problems become bigger in your mind, than they actually are. Why are we always so negative guys, come on, let's at least try to be positive human beings.

I love you,

heartSTAY POSITIVE, STAY SMILING, STAY LOVELYheart

P.s. Don't be offended, somebody had to say it ;)

My past mistakes depress me. I'm not young anymore. I wish I could have changed so many things. I'm married now and I love my husband and my job but .. old stuff still haunts me. And the fact that I'm going to be 30 this year .. I want to be 20 again! But .. your article is true. :)

My mistakes haunt me too sometimes, and if I could turn back time I would make so many changes that you wouldn't recognize me today. But... I can't, so I'd rather live the life I do have to the fullest, rather than fill it with negativityheartsmiley

Yes .. I am quite a negative person. I am very critical of myself also. How would you change those horrible qualities?

You are right, swimming in depression is terrible; but, that is where I am stuck. How do I get out, it's hard to believe it can just be positivity? Thanks for the beautiful post, it made me happy.

I think what has helped me in those moments when positivity and hope just isn't possible is to just aknowledge the fact that, ok, right now I can't feel those things, but It's not my fault, I'm battling an incredibly challenging illness that is distoring my thoughts and feelings, and that I neither asked for or can make go away at will. BUT I am doing the best I can right now, and that IS actually something. You are here, you are talking about it, that is HUGE. You are dealing with one of the most painful experiences a human can have, and yet you are here, surviving it. All of us here are doing that. It takes an incredible amount of courage and strength to get through the day, and yet we do it, day after day - I think it's time we all remind ourselves that we are actually AWESOME even if we don't feel like we are.

You, sir (or ma'am), get all of my up votes.

It is incredibly difficult to get out of the deep dark places in the recesses of your mind but the fact that you have dealt with these dark places before and you have found your way out of them is incredible. The resilience you have toward succumbing to these feelings of hopelessness is something you should really feel proud of.

So I am having some trouble right now controlling my depression. I tried thinking about how I have depression and that its not my fault that I have to deal with this disorder but it kind of makes me feel worse. The fact I have to deal with it and that I hurt so much. Then after that it makes me feel selfish because I am worrying about myself when some people have it worse. It's an endless cycle. I was hoping writing to you would help get my mind off how I am feeling, it's helping a little. Thanks for listening.

Sorry to hear you are struggling right now, it?s so challenging fighting through this because it seems like no matter what, our minds have a way of turning our thoughts upside down until it makes us feel worse, not better. Ah, the endless cycle - I know it well. And I still succumb, but I am starting to get better at recognizing it for what it is. A few thoughts to explain my post, and hopefully to understand where you are at:

Yeah, I can understand how it not being our fault actually CAN make us feel worse. I mean, why us? What did we ever do to deserve this? And the answer is, nothing. It is an unfortunate example of how life can be monumentally unfair. And that feels truly horrible. And we sometimes then can think of other people who life has also been monumentally unfair to - people who have suffered devastating losses, etc. and THAT can make us feel worse, because we feel that hey, they have the ?right? to feel this way, they have it way worse! I?ve been through all of this, to the point of HOPING something horrible would happen to me, so that I could feel like I at least ?deserved? to feel this pain.

So, where does this leave us? Well, for starters, it not being our fault also means we are perfect, whole, lovely human beings. Who happen to have the unfortunate bad luck of having this illness. But, we are not broken, damaged, wrong, or to blame, although we often feel that way. And as far as thinking about others whose situations might be so-called ?worse? than ours, it is just a reminder that we are not shut off from the rest of humanity - in this life many people suffer worldwide for a variety of reasons, and just as we can feel loving compassion for their suffering, we can also feel loving compassion for our own suffering, we are just as deserving. There is a book by Kristen Neff called ?Self-Compassion?, which I found very helpful in dealing with the tougher moments, as it can help you to deal with the unfairness of life and our situation. I found listening to it on my ipod was great since I was having trouble concentrating on reading. Others might have some suggestions of different resources, but in general books on mindfulness are good.

You are perfect and whole, and fully deserving of love and support through this incredibly difficulty time.

I totally get what you are saying. It is HARD and the fact that you can get to a place like this is amazing and brave in itself, I know positivity can't get you all the way, but this journey back to happiness is like a ladder, positivity is not just a step, it's the two rods at the sides, that holds up all the steps in between. You can build that ladder and climb all the way up. Wherever you want to be, you will get there, and if it's happiness you want, don't fret honey, you WILL get it.Positivity doesn't just mean the cleshpositivity, because positivity is in stages, it takes time, the more of it you have, the longer the rods of the ladder, the more the steps in between and the closer you are to happiness. And you know what, though some people think they are incapable of it, they are, sure, It might take time to achieve it, but know that it is ACHIEVABLE. It's not easy, I completely understand that, but you will get there. You CAN achieve what you want, it's not a matter of intelligence or wealth, anyone can do it, including YOU❤ You are loved cherished beautiful, don't let anyone tell you any different, and most important of all you are STRONG, strong enough to climb the ladder ;) I believe in you, now it's your turn to believe in yourself

Depression is hard. Instead of being sad when things go wrong, depression is when you are sad when things are going right! I try to stay positive by keeping things in perspective. Sometimes you just have to step outside the box and look at it from an objective point of view. Yea, this is easier said than done. So how do you do it? Well, you use coping mechanisms. One is to recognize that this is happening. Two, is to materialize it in a physical manner ( HEALTHY)- writing, drawing, screaming, listening to music. You'll realize once you have done all that, your emotions will calm- then you can take a step back and look at perspective. Stay strong guys!
