I don't know what to do

I've been struggling with depression badly for a few months and I did all the right things - saw a GP, started meds, got a therapist. Things improved but I feel like I've been stuck in the same place for weeks now.

It's getting harder to make myself take the meds. I missed 2 days, then yesterday I took 3 days all in one go. Not enough to cause real harm but I know I shouldn't have done it. It didn't have much effect and now I kind of want to do it again, but take more.

I don't know if I should get back in touch with my GP or what they would do (I'm in the UK). I have no desire to end my life. I think I just want to feel physically unwell. I feel like its a waste of a doctor's time.

@LFB I'm in the UK too.

The impression I get is that GPs here don't think depression is a waste of their time at all, so I think it's very likely your GP will be very keen to continue trying to help you overcome your depression.

I'm no expert, but based on what I've read I think you're right that missing 2 days of meds, then taking 3 days all in one go was not a good approach. If the meds aren't working, the usual approach is to keep the dose steady, give them enough time to work, and then, if necessary, try a different type of antidepressant. I think there are maybe about six different types, with several brands within each type.

The other factor is your therapist. Normally, a good therapist makes a treatment plan pretty early on so that you have a pathway to complete recovery. If that didn't happen in your case, or if something has gone wrong with the treatment plan, then a good therapist will fix the plan so you can feel hopeful again. Just like meds, therapists often have to be changed until you find one who is right for you and who gives you hope.

@RarelyCharlie thanks so much for your considerate reply.

I'm trying to find the confidence to call my GP again. Every day is another chance I guess. I really don't want to be at the point where I think regular small overdoses are OK. I have enough trouble with other forms of self harm!

I've been having short term counselling which will finish next week and then I'll change to a different therapist. The one I'm seeing now is great but I think I'm quite aware that it's limited so looking forward to doing something longer.
