When I told my mother of my depression, she told me that I was choosing to be this way. That hurts. Now I know not to bother her with any of it. So what now?

I understand your feelings. And it's valid. I feel the same with my fam, sometimes it's pointless to talked to them about my feelings, because they always make it about them. But you know what.. That's why i am here☺ and you are here also, it's mean looking for help and support even though we never met with these nice people.

@generousKitten6660 It hurts when someone you care about fails to understand what you're going through, therefore I am very sorry you experienced it. You cannot choose to be depressed, yet your feelings are genuine. You do not have to bear this alone, even if it makes reasonable that you might feel shut down following her response. By being honest here, you've already shown strength. Would you like to discuss ways to get the help you require without feeling rejected or who else in your life you might feel more comfortable sharing with?

@generousKitten6660. I'm so beyond sorry that she responded to you that way as I can only imagine that hurt deeply.  You didn't choose this pain at all.  Please remember your feeling are 100% valid.  No one can take that away from you.  You deserve support and understanding.  You are not alone, and I am glad you shared your feeling here with us.  We are all here for you.  🩵

I'm really sorry to hear that. Having the person that should unconditionally support you denounce your feelings like that is horrible. It's good that you've come to 7 Cups to discuss this. I wish you all the best and I have hope for you.

@generousKitten6660 sometimes parents can not understand the way we feel since they have been grown in another way, sometimes you’d have to try to push harder to make them understand, you can try again talking with her but only you and her, try speaking from what started, what made you be in this mental state now

You never choose to be that way. While technically, your choices are yours, they are heavily influenced by how your mind ticks. And mental illness isn't a quirk, it's an illness that fundamentally alters how you think, act and feel.

Never feel guilty for an illness. Do you have the option to see a therapist?
I'm here if you want to message me.

@generousKitten6660 You feel you can't talk to your mother about your depression and she has let you know she thinks its your choice. That must be hard.

Oh Good God! You don't deserve to be treated this way, these kind of situations can toughen up even more when you don't have a shoulder to cry on, especially the one you've been expecting, but I'd like to remind you that after all this, some doors still remain open, I'd feel more than delightful if you'd leave a text and choose me to be by your side anytime and any day.
