No support network at all
When I told my mother of my depression, she told me that I was choosing to be this way. That hurts. Now I know not to bother her with any of it. So what now?
@generousKitten6660 I’m sorry to hear that your mother is invalidating your depression after opening up to her about it. That must be really upsetting and frustrating. Depression can be very hard to manage and it was wrong of your mother to say that. However, you are such a brave person for building up the courage to tell her and also for reaching out for support on here.
@generousKitten6660I'm really sorry your mother responded that way—that must have been very painful. Depression is not a choice; it's a real medical condition that deserves understanding and support. Since you can't count on her right now, consider reaching out to someone else you trust, like a close friend, teacher, counselor, or mental health professional. You deserve to be heard and helped. If you want, I can help you find resources or suggest ways to get support. You're not alone in this.

Hey that's actually not great of what your mom said to you such a thing that made you feel even worse, but let me tell you one more thing nothing is your fault... You are not the one to be blamed it's just these parents are mostly like this. So this is definitely not your fault and don't worry too much on what parents or anyone tells you cause you know how much problems you are facing and why too. So that doesn't make her words right?

Hello, nice to meet you. So sorry that your mother does not support you. Depression is real. How you feel is important. You will be supported here. Many of us here have struggled for years with depression. We know and understand what you are going through. You are not alone. Wishing you a lovely day/afternoon/evening.
I've been where you've been and continue to be. Maybe a local church rooted in Christ could help? I could hook you up but if not, do you have a therapist? What words do you need to hear? For example, I think you need to hear, you are not alone, your mother was wrong and uneducated to tell you that and you should NOT take her words to heart as though it were true. No, what she said is a lie so don't believe it. You matter. Always and forever. You are not choosing this. It chose you unfortunately. I'm so sorry your own parents don't seem to help much. Distance yourself from them as much as you need to. She needs humility and compassion. You'll be okay in time. Prioritize your health in these difficult moments. Take a nap, talk to whoever you feel safe with. I wish I knew more about the situation you're in. But don't give up. It's not worth giving up when you're whole life could change in such amazing ways tomorrow, an hour from now or two months from now. It's worth it to persevere but you need hugs and a shoulder to cry on and to listen when in these struggles, not criticism. There is always hope. I've struggled with anxiety disorder, ADHD, self loathing and depression my entire life at the age of 30 so I can empathize. Thank you for being open. I hope this community serves you well.
@generousKitten6660 Seems your feelings are dismissed when you talked about your depression openly. It takes courage to express vulnerability. But not everyone would understand someone completely, even if it's our parents. Have you thought about discussing with other supporting members that you trust?

I'm really sorry to hear that your mom didn't respond in a supportive way. It's tough when you're trying to open up and you don't get a constructive reaction. It sounds like you're feeling hurt and invalidated by your mom's response. It's understandable that you'd feel discouraged from sharing with her again. What are some other ways you can get the support you need?
@generousKitten6660. Same. My mom thinks I have to “make my own happiness” and it is “mind over matter.” But guess that doesn’t apply to her with her migraines. I’m done trying to explain to her. It only makes me feel even worse.
@generousKitten6660 I understand how much her words may have stung you, but I want you to realize that no one 'chooses' depression. She just can't understand that. Don't think about her words; instead, focus on yourself and your healing. You are a brave soul, just going through a rough patch in your life and you can do it!
Sorry to hear that your mom said so and she is unaware its not a choice. One possible what now you have asked - you have already done is joining this amazing community where people have the same lived experience as you. In this safe place, you will not feel alone, you will find resources to understand more about your condition and much more. Wish you all the best in your healing journey.
