No support network at all
When I told my mother of my depression, she told me that I was choosing to be this way. That hurts. Now I know not to bother her with any of it. So what now?
@generousKitten6660 It really hurt that when you opened up about your depression, your mother made it seem like it was your choice. I hear you feeling shut down and alone now, wondering where to turn for support.
@generousKitten6660
I am so sorry about that, how it went and about your mother’s response. You may feel like you can’t take to her but I want you to know you have a whole community willing to listen to you, the way you feel, your depression is not something to be taken lightly, it’s something serious that matters to us all, hope you know that, wishing you all the best, much love.
What I've been told about depression...
Get over it
You're too sensitive
Grow up
Depression is a choice
Don't think about
You caused this
And the list goes on...
So, I completely get it! 🤗
@generousKitten6660 That sounds really hurtful, especially coming from someone you hoped would understand. I’m glad you felt comfortable sharing it with us here. You’re not alone! 💛

That's too painful coming from your Mother. I can understand how difficult it must be for you hearing that. I'm really sorry that you have to deal with it by yourself. She may dismiss it because she isn't totally aware of what you are going through, but know that your feelings are valid and feel free to open up and share your feelings here as we all are with you through this. You are not alone. Sending warm thoughts your way!
@generousKitten6660 I'm really sorry your mom said that; depression isn't a choice, and your feelings are real.
@generousKitten6660 this must have hurt you a lot. Depression is never a choice, and your feelings are real and valid , you didn’t choose to feel this way. Even if she couldn't provide support , we’re here to listen and support. and it doesn’t sound like your mom meant to hurt you on purpose, it may be that she doesn’t really understand depression or how to manage it.but still that lack of understanding can be painful too. reaching out here is important, and if you feel like this support isn’t enough, talking with a therapist could also be a helpful next step.
@generousKitten6660
im sorry to hear that your mother felt that you can muscle your way out of feeling depressed. even though you cant see it as a physical wound it can be incredibly painful as youve expressed. please remmeber that you are supported here and if you need a safe space to vent please contact a listener! :)
@generousKitten6660 Hey Kitten!
It's brave of you to share something like this. I honestly appreciate that you are reaching out.
About your mom. Yes, parents unintentionally dismiss experiences like depression. But it's not their fault, they haven't been taught what actually the term even mean. Don't try to make her understand right now.
Instead use your time and energy on healing. Getting support from a listener or therapist here from 7 cups or from anywhere possible.. Taking initiative to make a change in your mood, like light exercises in the morning, listening to songs if you like, finding new hobbies to engage, talking with trusted friends helps you feel light and better.
@generousKitten666 I think your way is hard for her to support you. I understand you were sad after her words. You still have support outside if you look for it.
