Seeking Advice on Dealing With Intense Feelings That Come With Depression or Art

For some context, I've started to really buckle down and deal with my depression in the last four months. I see a therapist weekly and am taking medication - 200mg of Wellbutrin - and Seroquel for sleep. I have Major Depressive Disorder, which I've been dealing with on and off again since I was 18 (I'm 27 now).

But... I could use some advice.

I have a solid full-time job. I workout almost every day. And I'm not abusing substances or anything. I have a good life and a support system I'm working on building. I feel like I'm making progress, even if it is slow.

Regardless, on my worst days, I'll wake up and feel as if all the color and vigor has been sucked out of the world. On the "best" (maybe I should say lightest) days of dealing with my depression, I feel very melancholy, but I can't cry. I'm a sensitive person, and sometimes it feels as if these sad feelings will overwhelm me. They make me extremely uncomfortable and it can be really distressing when my day starts off in a low mood. It almost makes me feel like I'm choking inside.... if that even makes sense.

Sometimes stuff will trigger these feelings. For example, I was rewatching an old show I loved as a kid -- Inuyasha. It's pretty pulpy and goofy at this age, but I was having fun with it.

However, when the ending credits ran, a song played that made me extremely nostalgic and depressed, so much so that it ruined my mood for the rest of the day. I tried to go for a walk, but it didn't really help that much. I'm also with my parents right now because of the whole COVID-19 thing, and I felt too embarrassed to tell my parents that an anime has brought up a lot of difficult feelings for me to handle.

The thing is - it was just a song - I feel as if I shouldn't be so affected by media and art like this. Yes, art can create these feelings, but I guess I'm really struggling with how to process negative emotions like sadness, etc when they come up. I don't want to give up stuff that I love and I do enjoy experiencing a wide variety of art, regardless of the tone. I guess I feel like something is wrong with me.

Here's the song, by the way: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zv2JI_jyVPk

I guess what I'm asking is

If any of you have felt like this when dealing with depressive feelings that feel like a lot, what do you do to find relief or process them?

Have any works of art, whether be a song or show or a novel, made you feel a wave of depression or melancholy that's too much to handle? If they have, how do you work through this?

Thank so much for reading or for any advice. Anything helps!

Sometimes I get misty eyed when I hear music or see art from a time period that was very eventful or emotionally charged (good or bad), or even art/music I haven't seen before that carries echoes of that time. And yes, that has included some childhood cartoons that don't seem like they should inspire so much. Anime is particularly good at creating a mood for feels.

To commiserate, this of all things makes me weepy: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mRaly9tk8v0

Ah, back when I believed I had promise and could overcome anything life threw at me...

In other words, it is not strange at all to have an experience like that, so please don't think there is anything wrong with it! Take it as an opportunity to learn what it means - what it was about that time that tugs at you so strongly. It might provide some clues as to what you need in your life that you currently aren't getting.

I want to say this is a beautiful thread that I can geniunely understand. Sometimes when I watch things that make me depressed, I have a moment with that character I relate to. So it's like both of us are together in the same room sharing each other's pain. So I sit with it for a long time and follow along the journey with them by my side. It's good to exercise the heart with profound feelings that cannot be shared easily with another soul. It helps you understand yourself and others and one day you can say you really feel for them. on your journey through deep sadness and heartbreak, I have found love through it all. Since love is not only about positivity, but also the negative events that plague our lives from time to time. It teaches us to care and respect one another for our time is valuable and can be cut short at a moment's notice. Keep your feelings cherished and precious inside of you.

Greetings, in a way we are alike since I am, among others, struggling with depression for 9 years now. I am glad that unlike me, you can still hold a job, exercise and keep a healthy way of living, I have slent most of this enormous time of my life in bed...

It proves once again my hunch that major depression must have some biological connection (like an undiscovered neurological virus that affects us by sucking the will to live out of us). My therapist told me: exercise, get a job, quit smoking and drinking. Well, you have a job, you exercise and you carry out a healthy way of living yet you have major depression like me for 9 years now...

It has nothing to do with the life style, before major depression hit me, I was very active, had a job and friends and so many interests...even traits of OCD 😊

These emotional waves are very common for me too and I learned to go with them. I can be triggered emotiobally very easy, by songs, art, an expression, saying, a movie...now I let them flow fluidly like water...many times I said I cryied so much that I have no more tears, yet I do, every single time...😶

No medication program has worked for me...and opiates I refused...

I hope from the bottom of my heart and soul that one day they will find a true cure for depression because this, depression is a true silent global pandemic that makes more victims around the world than anything else...

You have my warm hugs and compassionate thoughts🤗😊😶

I came across your post and I found it interesting. I went through a similar experience some weeks ago. it happened when i listened to hotel california song, and it totaly ruined my mood lol. but later, analizing, I realized that, that sadness came from my childhood. i wanted to be a singer so my parents bought me a karaoke machine when i was a kid, which i never used later because they made me embarrased by it... long story, short... i couldnt sing that song because it was a difficult pitch for me to sing (i found this many many years later) but that discouraged me at the time and i stoped using the karaoke. my parents also never encourage me to keep going, because they didnt know anything about pitches, or vocal lessons or anyhing... and i grew up frustated never accomplishing my singer dreams...
well, my point is, even though i grew up with some of those regrets, that song made me sad because of those experienes as a kid. my therapist told me about the "snowball" thoughts, which normally work THAT way...
I listened to hotel califonia (now in my late 20's) and my mind started traveing to when i was kid and didnt use my karaoke, and suddenly I was regretting all my life decisions and feeling a total failure lol.
we are sensitive beings and we drift very easily between a temporary sadness and a deep depressive thought.
Maybe inuyasha was present in your childhood and was in a parallel line with some importand or key event in your childhood and you are drifting between melancholy (because honestly it is a very good show, and it also triggers some feelings in me) and depressive thoughts that somehow ruin your mood completely.
You now have the tools to keep your mind healthy. its not wrong to have these feelings, just dont let them win over your progress and well being. you got this and im proud of you.
This is only my POV not the absolute truth lol but i just wanted to share my experience as well. huuugs
