Self compassion

How do I learn self compassion. I'm 30 years old and my self loathing is the worst its ever been. I truly don't believe I have good qualities, am attractive in any way, or have worth or valuable thoughts and opinions. It has interfered with everything including my ability to do job interviews and to keep friendships afloat. It has taken me further away from my partner and I find it hard to connect to anyone.

@KindPear

Hi there, thank you for reaching out for support today. I'm so glad you're starting your journey of finding self-compassion, this shows a lot of strength! It can be difficult to un-learn negative thoughts about ourselves, and this can definitely impact our relationships, as you said. Something I like to do is when I notice a negative thought I am having about myself, asking myself what made me feel this way, and then replacing the negative thought with a positive thought. I also find that journaling out all my worries and negative thoughts at night before bed or first thing when I wake up helps. I hope you are able to find self-compassion soon. heart

@KindPear

I recommend watching this lecture that describes depression as "aggression turned inward". It will give you a big-picture understanding of why we do it. The two major points are that "depression is agression turned inward" and "depression is learned helplessness". Understanding why you do it might help you move past it and find a healthier coping mechanism, or allow you to dig deeper to understand what is behind the aggressive drive.

Be kinder to yourself when the world does not seem that way. Life is too short to dwell on the negatives and the past. Have fun, do the things you enjoy, and don't compare yourself to someone you see on social media. We all have our own good qualities, but we have to look in the right perspectives.
