What do you do when you don't feel like getting better?
I had been doing so well just a few months ago, but I've fallen back so hard. Being happy takes so much energy, and I'mtired. I don't want to just be blindly happy, I want the root of whatever this is I'm feeling to go away. Those seem like two distinctoutcomes. Problem is I don't know what said root is.
I keep coming back to finding myself wanting something bad to happen to me. I don't want to actively hurt myself, but I feel like I deserve pain.
I hear you. I'm struggling with this too. I've had people say it's just "one of those things" and that I just need to wait it out and try to keep living my life. But I don't want to sit idly by, I want to get better. At the same time, though, I'mexhaustedof dealing with this. I encourage you to keep trying. Try to be happy, try to find the root of the problem, try to talk it out with someone you're comfortable with. You do not deserve pain, you deserve happiness and peace. Your feelings are valid, and I think talking them out with someone close to you could be really beneficial.
Depression is one of the most complex, confusing illnesses out there, which makes it so challenging to endure. When it first hit me, all I could think about was trying to figure out the root cause, the "why", in hopes that knowing that would somehow let me fix it, or at least I would not feel so guilty feeling bad for apparently no reason. I also remember hoping something bad would happen to me, something that would manifest on the outside all the hurt I was feeling on the inside, something that then would justify or allow me to have these feelings. But eventually after much researchandtalking to therapists, I have learned that there can be a complex, interplay of causes, many of which are outside your control, such as the way in which our bodies happen to process stress hormones, or the role of digestive health on mood. People like to emphasize behaviors and negative thinking as being the cause, but unfortunately, it's a chicken and egg sort of thing. Months ago I had NO negative, depressive thoughts, and I was active, eating healthy, and social. Depression hit me again anyway. Why? At this point, I'm just accepting that maybe there is no one reason, the depression right now just IS. I wish you healing and love on your journey through this challenging illness, and please remember thatyou didn't ask for it, and you definitely don't deserve to feel any of this pain. The pain is a symptom of an illness, as is our feelings of guilt over not being able to feel happy. Right now, that part of us is broken, like a person who has a broken leg. It will heal in time, but in the meantime, it's okay to not be able to feel happy or gratitude or any of the many things we're told we NEED to feel to "get better". You are doing the best you can right now.
I love your post, I've struggled for years and go between trying to do something to help me, but find just letting myself 'be depressed' is the best way to help. It's difficult though because you want to fix yourself. Do something positive, again sometimes you have to wait for a feeling of positive ness, just be.
Woah...dude...that is like EXACTLY what I've been going through and how I feel...
I've definitely been struggling with the guilt of being unhappy when I'm supposed to and sometimes wish my negativity would manifest itself in reality...And before my last breakdown I had friends, was volunteering, doing great in school, then BAM! Depression relapse...
...Woah
Powerfuleyes, I have same issue with you. I just want to end my life I don't want to struggling anymore. I tried to be happy, positive, motivate myself but it's just very very short period maybe just at the moment. It's enough for me, I'm really tired!!!
Excellent suggestion, GentleMom!
Its hard when you're down in the rutt. I use to call it my rock-bottom. I was so low, there sometimes was nothing left to do. I had no interest in anything, no interest in life, friends, and I felt happiness was unattainable. I either wanted to hurt myself, or end my life.
These feelings are INTENSE- and they don't go away. But one thing that pulled me out of it, was started to explore those feeling in the world around me. I started by taking LONG hot showers, I would feel the water on my body. Take it into the present, recognize the now. I wouldn't think about the past or the future. I would startto take LONG LONG walks outside, absent mindedly lost in my own thoughts. While walking I could feel the atmosphere, see people around me, feel and smell the air. It brough pespective- again focusing on the here and now, not the past and not the future.
These take time to do, but eventually I was able to realize that there is indeed more to this life than just my sorrow. I hope that helps. Moral of the Story, focus on the here and now first- and the past and future will make sense later.
