What's the point in self improvement when you are alone?
I feel better when I have someone in my life that I can depend on. I can surive being alone, but much of what I want in life depends on my close relationships. I could travel to other side of the world, but what is the point when I have no one to share it with? I am 100% certain that I want a family someday, but I am no closer to reaching that goal the more I am alone. This has heavily impacted my career ambitions. I have noticed that whenever I had a partner, I accomplished many milestones in school and my job. Having someone to lean on was always a tremendous help in gaining the motivation and discipline to keep achieving and putting myself ahead.
I feel an empty void that I cannot fill which keeps me from taking risks and pursing career goals. I just don't know how to circumvent this problem. I try not to worry about the things that I have no control over, but when all I can think about are the relationships that I lack, it's impossible to find any point or motivation to keep trying new things and pursing life goals.
I'm necessarily depressed, I just lack direction. I don't see the point in furthering myself when relationships are my main motivator. I want to be a provider. I want to care about someone. I've been feeling bored and lifeless for the past few years. I'm dating on and off, but so far I find people to be more annoying or too different to feel much romantic interest. It makes me wonder if there's something seriously wrong with me and who I am as a person when I'd rather be alone, yet desire more than anything to be with someone. At what point do I settle for someone and hope that it grows into something more? I have time on my side, as I'm turning 30 next year, but it doesn't necessarily make me feel any better because I feel that this should be the time when my career goals and ambitions should be taking off. Yes, I have a job and can pay the bills, but I don't care about it and I'm too uncertain about everything to take risks and try something else. I don't have any direction because I don't have anyone in my life that I can come to ask for support or people that I truly care about. I'm not really motivated by being wealthy and there aren't any causes that speak to my soul. But I don't want to become a robot by doing the same job year after year because I honestly don't care that much about it. I don't know what to care about.

That is a very thought-provoking question. Self-improvement should be done not for others but for yourself. It should be because you see something that you do not like. I am sorry to hear that you're struggling like and motivation can be difficult to find, especially during depression. We improve ourselves so that we can feel better and therefore make changes in our lives that impact us in the long-run. Also with self-improvement can come changes in your life that might just change the relationships around you. I can understand not having anyone at the moment that you feel particularly inclined to go to. But with self-improvement, you can definitely find others who are working on that same goal. I guess what I am trying to say is that self-improvement is an alone thing. It's something you do for you. No one else.
I heard you need direction. I am directed every day by Jesus. I was going nowhere doing nothing. Now I am getting everything I've wanted which is a family. Talk to Him and get direction. See the miracles happen. Im sorry you feel this way but i feel eager for you to find out what im talking about through experience. Give it a try..please.
