Does anyone else hate having to lie about this kind of thing?
My sister called and asked if I was having fun at my friends house. I said Yes, maam to her in a fairly chipper voice though I was crying earlier and almost immediately after the call ended I was crying again harder than before? I lied about having fun when in reality I was very upset at some things that happened.
Do any of you hate having to lie about being fine or happy when in reality youre broken and just downright depressed or anxious?
@Sleuthelle Heya, it's definitely common for people to lie about the way they're feeling and telling others that they're ok when they're not. Have you thought about what your particular reason for doing this is? :o Would you like to tell us more about what happened to make you cry? <3 *hugs* How are you doing on this particular day?
@Rose I
@Sleuthelle Ah, that's alrighty. Have you talked to a listener 1-on-1? :o <3 I hope you manage to come to a decision soon, best of luck with making that decision
I do hate it and I do it all the time.
I hate lying about it too. I must have said "I'm just not feeling well" or "I'm tired" to explain my depression thousands of times. It just seems easier and more acceptable to blame my lack of energy and enthusiasm on physical concerns rather than admit that I have a mental illness.
@Sleuthelle
I understand why you do it but you shouldn't. If you said how you felt I'm sure she would have understand help you out. Hiding symptoms and feelings in your depression is a very dangerous path. The more you do that the more you isolate yourself emotionally. You need to open up and be genuine to recover
@Booklover95. So how do you do that when you have been lying for the past 6 years..
@Imstruggling79
Is never too late to be real with people who care about you, trust me.
I was like you before but I learned is too much. We can't handle so much inside :( So please , bit by bit, start relying on the ones that love you! You need support
@Booklover95..
Finding the professional support is extremely hard without the money. I would love to be rid of this and be normal but don't think it's going to happen for a while.
@Imstruggling79
Have you checked with your family doctor? Is how I got my therapist. Some countries allow family doctors to send their patients to professionals to help them, maybe your country has it too?
@Sleuthelle I do it all the time unfortunately :( I feel broken
@Iviish.. me too. Very broken :-(
@Sleuthelle
I understand what you mean about lying about your depression. I actually do that quite a lot as well. It can be hard when the people who love you are just doing their best to support you and it feels like you aren't getting better. I always like to remind myself that depression is an individual journey and recovery has its ups and downs. It's okay not to be okay. It's okay not to be having fun even when you feel like you should. It's a normal feeling to feel bad about lying to someone because it can feel as though you are not to burden them.
My mom asked if I was depressed (over the dinner table too, like some big group confession) and I had to say no. It makes me sad to feel so alone. I only feel comfortable talking to a few of my friends about how I feel, and there really isn't a counselor or therapist I can talk to. Yes, I hate having to lie about this, but I don't want to be given the "depressed" label either.
@CautiousUniorn373
I agree, being labeled as "depressed" is uncomfortable. It makes it feel like you're being defined by that single word.
However, it's also really important to be a bit honest, even if it's just mentioning that you feel a bit down.
@Sleuthelle I feel the same way. I hid my anxiety and depression for a long time but when I told my close friends and family, they either overeacted and treated me like a baby or didn't know how to react and started acting awkward around me. So I went right back to hiding the pain. It gets me so frustrated and even more depressed but honestly, I'd rather hide than let that whole reaction happen again.
I hate lying. I thought that when my parents found out about my mental health issues, that things would be different - but it made it worse, if they noticed I was 'unwell', then was questions and "you need to try harder". My dad would take it as me being lazy and laugh it off, or my mom would turn it into "I was depressed to BUT I cured it by doing *stupid small thing*"
So after 5 years, I just keep it to myself and don't tell anyone. Only my therapist. It's not like I have more people in my life. So even if I am having a bad depression day, I force myself to do the dishes and semi-clean the house, so my parents when get back from work don't make jokes about me doing nothing all day, even though I was half the day forcing myself to study and half the day in bed, because that forcing-myself situation was overwhelming.
I don't think anyone likes lying. But if it's the only option, it's sometimes a hard necessity..
