How has depression affected your sleep habit?
Depression can have serious and mild affects in our sleeping patterns or habit.
How has depression affected your sleep pattern or habit?
Will love to hear from you
Sleeping is one of the biggest things I look forward to on a daily basis, I feel like I can understand people who say they like to sleep or their hobby is sleeping.
And I really don't like getting up in the morning, after I wake up my mind is still basically asleep anyway, it's just that I'm not in a comfy bed.
@River either i sleep a lot or i barely sleep at all. i used to have to force my body to shut down, but right now im bassically just passing out.
@River I'm not sure if my insomnia came from my depression or if my depression came from my insomnia?? Either way, if I do manage to sleep, I end up falling asleep around 3-5am. Sometimes I can only sleep for about 3 hours and sometimes I can sleep a full 8 but I'll usually wake up several times and have a hard time falling back asleep. Sometimes I just can't fall asleep at all and will just say awake for 1-3 days and end up just crashing and sleeping for like 12+ hours which makes me feel horrible. If I sleep that long, or if I don't sleep enough, I get terrible migraines and feel weaker than I usually do.
Sometimes it's pretty rough but lately, I've been sleeping a little nearly every night this week (I only missed one night) So, I'm doing a little better on sleep for now! Yay~ My depression hasn't really been as bad as usual this week either.
@River
I haven't had a bedtime routine or a regular sleeping schedule in more than a decade....
I sleep a lot one day and am still tired....
I find that when I'm highly sleep deprived I'm very elated especially when I'm alone...but then I crash very hard the day after and can't get up or do anything or want to care about anything...
@River It affects me in different ways. Some days I can't fall asleep because my thoughts just won't let me rest, some days I could just spend all sleeping.
Previously, it made me almost completely unable to sleep properly. I'd stay out of bed for as long as possible, unable to feel sleepy at all, and not want to go to bed, as it was absurdly difficult for me to fall asleep, and then my mind would be at the best place to torture me with feelings of worthlessness. No, I wanted to spend my time doing something I enjoyed, to at least be able to defend myself. My lack of sleep would also mean I'd wake up SUPER early, in spite of how I usualy went to bed absurdly late, something my mom loathes. I still feel this way when something especially traumatizing happens.
Now, I have a lot less trouble falling asleep, and in fact, it can happen pretty darn quickly! But it's harder for me to get out of bed, because I don't feel like dealing with the world and everything it has in its arsenal to throw at me. And also because I'm so used to sleeping little, that I feel convinced I'm undersleeping even when I am oversleeping. Though, of course, I still fear oversleeping sometimes.
@OutdatedOatmeal Thank you for sharing! I hope you continue to take care of yourself. Rest is very important!
My depression comes from all sorts of various things. My grandma passed recently and that keeps me up at night almost all the time. I also deal with sleep paralysis that can sometimes keep me in bed for around half a day. I am planning on going to a sleep specialist when I am home from school, yet it scares me knowing that it could potentially happen again once I go to sleep. I also have severe anxiety. From reading this thread I know I'm not alone, neither are you. There are times where I'm lazy and there are times where I'm motivated, yet sometimes things aren't going to work out the way you expect them to, like getting to bed on time or getting a good night's rest.
I just sleep 4 - 7 A.m, even with (Removed by @River for mentioning specific medication) pills!
and it destroys my work life!
I have a really hard time sleeping because I can't "shut my brain off". I listen to podcasts and let's plays so I can focus on one thing and keep my thoughts quiet.
Always one extreme or the other for me personally. I feel like it starts off as I can't sleep more than 2 or 3 hours a night for days on end, and then I finally hit the other end of extreme exhaustion and spend a few days in bed recovering. It's a vicious cycle
