Telling loved ones I am dealing with depression
Hello everyone on 7CupsOfTea
I am thinking about telling someone that I am dealing with depression. I had a very difficult loss of a loved one early this year and I believe it has turned into depression. I have not gone to the doctor to seek help as money is very tight and I do not want to tell my parents.
I know that may sound mean or something that i dont want my parents to know but i personally feel that they would not understand as I have tried hinting it before and it did not fly well.
I am however planning on telling a few good friends/relatives of mine. I just really need someone to rely on that i could talk to once in awhile and just help me feel a bit better.
I dont know how to tell people that i am dealing with this. I don't want them to feel hurt or upset at me. I have really started to isolate myself from others and dont enjoy doing things anymore like partying and stuff like that. My friends invite me often to do things and I just come up with so may excuses but I honestly just dont want to party. They are starting to get mad at me and a couple have resorted to "un-friending" me entirely which i feel is all my fault.
I feel that this is somewhat of me grieving too. I have lost my best friend 2 months ago and a really good friend early this year and it has been very difficult. I grieve a lot when i am alone and try to hide it all when around others.
any tips or advice on how to tell them would be very helpful or even tips on overcoming depression and grieving would be helpful too.
thank you

Hi @LightningHeart16
I moved this to the Depression category because it seems like a natural fit.
I can certainly understand that anxiety in telling your parents. I never told mine which ended up being something that I regreted in the final analysis. That's not to say that your experience will be the same but just to say that I can understand the anxiety in not opening up on depression.
On the basis of this experience, I can't profess to being a great expert in telling others of depression. It can be difficult to do and when I've been brave enough, it's been a useful thing to share with people that I trust.
I hope someone else can provide you with some good advice here in the depression category. Good luck!
So sorry to hear you are going through all this @Lightningheart. It is very hard to lose a loved one and as you know grieving follows. And being down and depressed is part of the grief process. But we really need to be supported at a time like this, so you are making a good choice to share this with some friends/relatives. But you are wondering how to do this...perhaps not easy, but if you can be honest with how it is for you, its likely they will be very willing to support you. And maybe your parents too, if later you feel able to share with them.
At times like this we also find there are some who are not able to support us or cope with the changes in us. As you are finding with some of your friends and its sad for you too.But I'm sure you will find those who will walk beside you on this journey through grief. And remember you are not alone and we are here for you too.
Hello, I'm so sorry that you are experiencing this *hugs*. Reaching out to others for help is a great idea :) Feel free to talk to a listener in a 1-1 chat if you want to :)
So sorry to hear what you're going through! I lost a friend early this year also so I can understand somewhat of how you feel.
I decided to hide most of my grief too but it did not work out well for me tbh. If you feel you can't speak to your parents I'd advise to find a close friend or someone you feel you can trust to confide in. There are also free support services where you can see a counsellor for free, you can Google your local area and see what comes up for you.
Definitely don't keep it in, anxiety and depression are nothing to be ashamed or embarrassed about and you'll be surprised how many people are going through the same thing once you are honest about how you feel.
Take care and I so hope you feel better soon xx
Thanks everyone for their kind words. It is comforting to know I'm not the only one who is going through a thing like this. Its a very long process till Im back to living normally again. It's difficult living in this. I am hoping to try and seek help soon maybe from a counselor something whenever I get the strength to bring this up to my doctor on how much it has effected my life.
Thanks again everyone :) *hugs*
