What does depression feel like?

Recently a person told me : "I don't understand depression. I mean it's more of just attention seeking ." So depression can mean many things to different people. Many people have their own definition or way of explanation.

Its just complete numbness. I either feel numb or have feelings of guilt, worthlessness and emptiness inside me. I am not fazed by things easily but somehow the negative things tend to stick to my mind.

Nothing makes sense and nothing means anything. I don't see a point to my existence and feel like it was better if I weren't around because what is the point of existing when there is no meaning or no purpose to it?

Even if I achieve something I feel like it's worthless so I don't feel very happy about it.

My emotional and sometimes physical responses to things are delayed.

I feel isolated because of my inability to react to situations like people do and have a hard time having meaningful conversations with people because I can't relate to them and also can't tell them about my condition. I only have 2 friends who know about my depression. With the rest of the world right now, I have social anxiety.

It feels like drowning. It feels like floating in space where you have a want and need to move but the efforts you put in are never quite enough to get you moving.

The biggest challenge I have right now is this inability to connect with people. Between my anxieties, I just have a difficulty trying to make new friends. Im always talking myself out of contacting the friends I do have. Its just something about it that I have trouble overcoming.

It's like being alone and stuck. Feels like my life has been so wrong and there's no way to cancel it and it's frustrating.

Simply and perfectly put @timmywang93...

a hole of isolation that we fall deeper into as the disorder progesses. Alone and helpless. The brain science backs the behavioral symptoms we describe. But a brain that emerges on the other side becomes a gift. I will never handle a depressed individual in the ways those around me attempted to handle me. We are highly empathetic individuals, a gift and a curse. Too look at a fellow human and truly sense their feelings, the good and the bad, and hold no judgement about their state of living is what it means to be well; Human.

@EmotionsAndNeurochemicals Thanks. Exactly, I too will never tell anyone with depression that everything's gonna be okay and to face life with a head up because that's bull and we know it.

I can't pick my head up, I can't find motivation, I don't even think about my crush anymore. Nothing is interesting to me and I just don't care anymore. Life is unimportant.

It is like you are in a loop u wait for something different but it doesnt come. You are dead you are lifeless you find no motivation or meaning in doing things you stay in bed for weeks and weeks. weeks turn to months you find it very painful to get up or get dressed for work or school or anything else but sometimes you do and while approaching people you always think now its time to fake a simle u do that and thats how you spend your days

It feels like you're falling into a black, bottomless pit. It's truly the most terrifying thing.

It feels like Im covered in heavy oil-its everywhere, Im suffocating and I leave a slime trail like a little snail but only I can really see it. My dirty fingerprints are everywhere and my sorry spirit begs to plunge into a waterfall to take it all away so I can be free and clean.
