What is something Depression keeps others from knowing about you?

Depression can be good at masking who you really are as a person. It can keep others away and selfishly keep you all to itself. What is something that Depression keeps others from knowing or seeing about you?

How much I want connection. How much I am inadequate at it. How much I keep trying. How tired I am from the effort.

Depression hides just how unhappy I am, which sounds ridiculous but because I just put on that mask and get in with my life nobody knows how miserable I am the moment Im on my own

Depression for me is like when you look out into the sky and you don't see any stars. You see the darkness of the human existence at night, that is what my depression is. My depression is the darkness in my human existence. What people don't see about me is that sometimes I do have no stars and other times I have a night with a full moon and a full sky of stars.

@queenjosie This is very beautiful. Thank you for sharing with all of us. I am glad to hear that in spite of Depression, you are still able to recognize and see those stars at times.

@queenjosie wow that was the most poetic description of the highs and lows we go through with depression.

My depression has in the past mostly been driven by loneliness that made me ill. I don't think most people understand that because feelings are often seen as silly/fluffy by people like my parents. I also wish when people show signs of depression such as being late, sleeping a lot, missing work or appointments, I wish those things were met with understanding that the person may be struggling instead of judging them for "being irresponsible" or "unprofessional."

@Daydreamer47

No one really ask you why you did that deep in your soul. They just want to hear an excuse.

@Daydreamer47 I know *exactly* what you mean. A lot of my mild depression is driven by loneliness as well. Part of it is me, bc I have social anxiety. I have so much anxiety and to most other people the symptoms can mean utter coldness, incompetence, and/or unprofessionalism. Like you, I have family that brushes these things off, or is living in the belief that you can somehow get yourself out of it, if you try hard enough. Which, of course, is not how it works.

@funnySquare1982 yeah wow thanks for sharing. glad to meet someone else with social anxiety. my anxiety is super high as well. when i was in hs, my social anxiety was so high i felt like i was constantly covered in sweat and my clothes were always uncomfortable. I am doing a bit better now that I'm older and living on my own instead of with my parents, and i have an emdr therapist who is helping me.

Depression is what is ruining my life, everything seems worthless. Even when I try my hardest to try and stay "positive" I can't, they all worry and think I'm stressed and I am. Everything is overwhelming me and I feel as though I am drowning in a pit of my own despair but I will never be able to get.

What is something Depression keeps others from knowing about me?

The shame of past depression (aka negative stigma) keeps me from telling many people at all, about my senior year of high school.

And people who know me now, like only know me after college - some can hardly believe how I could have ever been so super depressed as a 17-18 yr old.
