Hi, I'm new here. My therapist recommended this site. I was first diagnosed with Major Depressive Disorder 7 years ago but hadn't had too tough a time until about a year ago. I had a really bad episode 2 months ago and had to be admitted to hospital because I was very suicidal. I'm a doctor, so I'm uncomfortable going to any local support groups in case I see my patients there (don't like to mix personal and professional). Unfortunately medicine is still a profession in which stoicism is the rule, and while my younger collegues are understanding I feel the need to hide my mental health history from my older collegues who are more rigid. It is really stupid. Doctors have a 2 - 3 times greater risk of dying by suicide than the general population - probably because we see some tough shit, yet don't talk about it. They don't give you immunity to mental illness when you recieve your MD (wouldn't that be nice!). Anyways, I'm hoping to get a bit of support and anonymity here.

@courteousThinker214 Working in health care is very stressful and many people can't understand it. I hope you keep taking care of yourself as well as you take care of others. It's really hard to keep your emotions in check specially when you work with people all the time, and the worst part is that the ones that cause the most stress are the collegues, there's so much tyranny and competition (not in every facility, of course) but MAN! we are all on the same team...why don't we treat each other with kindness?

Keep your head high and your heart warm! <3

Hi!

Being socially stigmatized when you suffer from a mental illness is unfortunately a liability. I'm a lawyer and took a leave in 2014 to treat major depressive disorder and the news spread. I know sometimes I'm regarded as hysterical, but I think everybody knows I can sue for damages and they keep thei prejudice to themselves.

I think it should be even more difficult to doctors, because that could undermine the trust patients put in them. Only a few people understand that depression could be as hard and dangerous as cancer. But everybody has compassion only for those with cancer. It's like we are sick because we want to.

Take care, beautiful spirit.

@Laura

Hi, I am new to this thread and my name is Amy. I was diagnosed with depression a couple months ago. I have stopped taking my meds. From time to time, I feel empty or alone. I stay up at night thinking on what I can do. I just need someone to speak with. Thank you.

Hi everyone, I'm very new to 7 cups and am very glad that I've found it and am hoping to find some people to relate with to aid in my current situation. I've had relatively severe depression since the age of 9 and am now nearing my mid twenties. It has never left me, but there have been times where it's easier to fight. Now is not one of those times. Two years ago, my mother was diagnosed with a rare and terminal cancer and while she's doing better than expected, it's still been very difficult. My fiance recently left me and now I live alone. There are so many additional stressors in my life at the moment that have been making it harder to keep fighting my depression. I'm hoping that through here I may possibly be able to find some more people to talk to in the difficult times, and to help others if I can. If anybody would ever like to chat and exchange stories, please feel free to send me a message.

Hey,

Does anyone know someone who is qualified or just knowledgeable on mental health who can give me a rough idea of what's going on without seeing a therapist? As I think that's a step too far. Thanks.

Hello! I am new here and actually don't know about this. Can you tell me about it?

Hello my name is Maria or written as Mariah,

have been dealing with some stuff a year ago and I went to a psychiatrist and in the first couple of months I have been diagnosed with depression and anxiety afterwards my psychiatrist came to the conclusion that I'm suffering from BPD (Borderline Personality Disorder) which made sense cause I had some mood swings and have my uncontrollable anger take control of me, and so on....

what I learned from my experience is that my childhood wasn't as normal as I thought it was inside my head, some stuff affected me but I didn't know that it changed into the person I am today. of course the happy moments took place and so did the bad ones, but unfortunately, I think the bad ones took control of my emotions as I grew up.

ps, this all, made me fall in love with being a psychiatrist and helping people.

love,

maria

Hello, I was depressed but it was not sinifjcant like what you all have been through. I was almost suicidal but I went straight to psyhcologist and it helped me so much. I am depressed for about 7 months from my diagnosis. It has something to do with my anxiety too which is worse.

I'm feeling better lately, my depression appears to be better when I can deal eith my anxiety better :) I'm glad I dont need medicine anymore :)

Hey everyone. My name is Amanda and I am very new to this website.

Unfortunately, I haven't had a chance to speak with a professional, but hopefully I will soon. I have been feeling really depressed for a year now. It all started when I moved to another country and lost all of my friends. Then, lots and lots of terrible things happened and I went through a lot. It got really bad about four months ago.

I barely sleep at night, and when I do, I see nightmares (really bad ones). I've lost interest to everything and I'm constantly thinking about hurting myself, which I've tried doing. The main problem is that have no friends to talk to, and things in my family aren't great either, so I can't even speak to my parents. They don't take me, or anything I say or do seriously. I'm feeling really lonely, as I'm alone all the time.

I'm also having problems with body image and positivity, which is a big part of me feeling depressed.

To be honest, I'm not exactly sure why I am here. I guess I'd like some support as well as someone to talk to, which is hard for me to admit, because I normally don't seek help but just try to deal with everything on my own (which is clearly not working). Gotta admit, smoking pot used to help at first, it just made me feel better and smile from time to time, but even weed isn't helping anymore.

I always don't know what to say, whether it's in real life or online. I guess that's about it.

Whoever you are reading this, I hope you are having an amazing day :) Take care.
