Suicide Prevention Month | State Suicide Prevention Council | Bureau of Community Health Services | NH Department of Health and Human ServicesWhat is suicide?

Suicide means ending your own life. It is sometimes a way for people to escape pain or suffering. When someone ends their own life, we say that they "died by suicide." A "suicide attempt" means that someone tried to end their life, but did not die.

Some key Facts on suicide:

Close to 800 000 people die due to suicide every year.

For every suicide there are many more people who attempt suicide every year. A prior suicide attempt is the single most important risk factor for suicide in the general population.

Suicide is the third leading cause of death in 15-19-year-olds.

79% of global suicides occur in low- and middle-income countries.

Is Suicide Preventable?

Suicides are preventable. There are a number of measures that can be taken at population, sub-population and individual levels to prevent suicide and suicide attempts. These include:

- reducing access to the means of suicide

- reporting by media in a responsible way

- school-based interventions

- introducing alcohol policies to reduce the harmful use of alcohol

- early identification, treatment and care of people with mental and substance use disorders, chronic pain and acute emotional distress

- training of non-specialized health workers in the assessment and management of suicidal behaviour

- follow-up care for people who attempted suicide and provision of community support.

Great Post and so needed !!! One that I have shared myself over and over on my social media account and did yesterday..

enlightenedWhat can you do to understand someone who has previously struggled with Suicidal thoughts/ attempts?

Listen to them , Support them believe what they tell you .. This is serious do not take it lightly do not judge them .. Let them know you care and love them .

enlightenedWhy do you think there is a stigma around suicide?

People to this day still do not take Mental Health seriously it is so agitating to me.. You are frowned upon and told to get over it and it is all in your head so people stay quiet and hide how they feel and deal with it alone and then finally do take their lives because No One Listened to them.. then people will say Wow that was so seflish of them to do this too us... well you should have been listenring and watchting instead of Judging and Not being Understanding and Believing !

enlightenedWhat could one do to help fight the stigma around Suicide?

Stand up for Mental Health be an Advocate and Let people know You are there for them and that you yourself knows what this feels like .. Never back down and do not allow people to push you aside.. Push for Help and Find good therapist and if needed meds.. Speak up and let your voice be heard!!

MENTAL HEALTH MATTERS !!

TALK TO SOMEONE ABOUT HOW YOU FEEL... NOTHING TO BE ASHAMED OF AT ALL !!

Peace and Love , Tyeheart
