Wednesday November 30 Disability Support Check-In Thread.
as we approach this next holiday. What kind of feelings does it bring to the surface?
Me: for me my holiday is Christmas, it is my favorite holiday. However, every year I wish I lived closer to my family.
Ahahaha I think we made ours at the same time
Feel free to delete mine if you'd like!
@DonaldK
Holidays are a mixed bag for me. With Celiac people fear inviting me to parties because everything has gluten. I try to reassure them that I can bring my own food and that they do not need to worry but they REALLY are trying to protect me. I love them for that. Its a balancing act. I do love Christmas, especially because people I know well and love cook dishes for me that are healthy and taste good. I tell my extended family that its all good. We can get together at a time that is not a holiday so its easier to share food that isn't going to make me sick. They should enjoy their hoilday.
@magicallySmiles50
I'll be attempting Celiac-friendly dishes for Chistmas Eve. It's tough as wheat is such a major part of the traditional meal and cross-contact is an issue, it's easier when it's turkey dinner!
Loneliness and bitterness at the fact that I have no family or friends to speak of and I spend the day sitting alone at home doing nothing other than crying while my roommate celebrates with her family and then comes home babbling about all the great food and fun she had. The only consolation is that I do have a fair few good friends online and some of them are in similar situations so during my night (when they're awake) I have some online support.
@Silvara If I were your roommate you would be welcome to celebrate with my family!
@AffyAvo
My roommate would love for me to go with her to her family Christmas but her family hate me and think I'm a bad influence despite me spending all my time trying to make my roommate's life easier (I am her carer).
I've decided to spend Christmas Day talking on Skype with a friend in the next state over from me who also has nowhere to go and nothing to do on that day.
@Silvara How could they hate you or think you're a bad influence if you are her caretaker?? that makes no sense. you would think that they would be grateful for the help that you give her.
@Silvara I often feel that way too. I spend a lot of time home alone and often feel lonely, but I have such a hard time believing that anyone would really want to spend time with me. So I distance myself from others because I just feel unworthy and have trouble trusting others. I often wish I could cry about it because maybe then that would give me some release, but for some reason the tears just won't come. I just feel numb.
Christmas is the big one for me too. I do love it but it can be so easy to overdo things and the time leading up to it is often stressful I find. I try to spread things out well ahead of time to avoid some of the stress. Since moving, last year was the first time I stayed in the same city, and am staying here again too. I find that helps. We'll still travel after Christmas to visit with more family but it helps to have the big busy days over with first. Then we get to observe the Orthodox Christmas quietly which is a really nice change of pace.
