Is there a situation where your disability allowed you to relate to someone better?

How are you doing today?

@AffyAvo

Is there a situation where your disability allowed you to relate to someone better?

I've learned that I can relate to ppl with DID the most on this site. Not fully, of course, but in many situations.

How are you doing today?

Miserable, but nothing new there.

@OneErased I can see where you can relate to those with DID, some similar experiences for your life and DID.

I do hope things improve for you soon!

@AffyAvo

yes, i can relate to people with physical disabilities better.

But i find hard to relate to people with autism regardless of my disability because i don't even know what autism is and what is just misconceptions as people with autism here on 7cups tend to blame all the offsite sources about autism (therefore all those which aren't on 7cups) as misconceptions and so, i stopped read them, and whenever i wish to learn something about autism, i am referred to offsite sources via googling them myself.

@CheerySandi it's a spectrum therefore there will be often disagreements. There's also the medical point of view or written descriptions of people not on the autism spectrum that clashes with the lived experience of people on the spectrum. So, don't blame yourself, it's a difficult topic similar to defining disability.

@CheerySandiHopefully the autism support community will come up with some good resources that others can refer to if they wish to learn more!

There's definitely some outdated stuff, and the medical community is coming around, but a lot of it was (and still is in some cases) focusing on achieving conformity.

@AffyAvo I don't know if it's my disability or just my personality.

I've probably learned to be more patient with myself and others. I can relate to challenges and barriers, relate to stigma and not being understood. I can relate to the exhaustion of explaining yourself to others and others lacking understanding. Sometimes I think I understood and others might tell me I didn't understand them at all and never will. I've experienced it from both angles and I understand where that might come from. Sometimes we might not be understood or understand. But when both accept it and treat each other supportively good things can happen.

@kindSoul10 You've explained so well some of things that makes living with a disability difficult and why you are such a good listener!
